For all I care, Devo can be on all my dvd's features. They had some good tunes Mister.

This had to be a fav film of someone's at Criterion. It's loaded with interviews with John Landis, Devo, film historians, etc.

Default Harakiri

Yes folks, Harakiri is coming and I can't wait. Just picked up 400 Blows, Marienbad, Yojimbo, and Naked at the B&N sale.

And the guy who directed the crappy Val Kilmer/Marlon Brando version.
(What, no love for Michael York, Burt Lancaster and Barbera Carerra? )

Although, yes, they do seem to be taking a bit of relish in getting their hands on a good populist Universal-ish bit of B/W horror for a change, even if they're never going to get any Todd Browning.

I bought Naked first, in a B&M store, because I thought that I might have a little trouble finding it. David Thewlis is excellent. I still need to get The 400 Blows, I passed it up for Naked since I knew that I would not have any trouble finding it. But Black Orpheus will be my next purchase if I can only get one film today.

Yes, Naked is excellent and I try to watch anything Thewlis is in now because of this performance. Naked was my most anticipated blu for awhile. I'm looking forward to War Horse which Thewlis is supporting I believe.

Great I'll have to check it out. I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and it sounds like it's right up my alley. Did you see Kingdom of Heaven? I hate that movie, but he was soooooo darn good.

I guess I'm one of the very few that's pleased with a Salo blu release. It's one of the few upgrades I've been waiting for....! I think it's a great movie, IMO *shrugs*

One of the extras on the Star Wars Saga is going to be a 91 min. feature about spoofs. A lot of people seem to think that's a terrible idea and a waste of space but I think it's a great idea for an extra and I'm really surprised more releases don't do it. (Martin Sheen's 'Coppola's Gone Mad' SNL skit would have made a fantastic AN extra, for instance).

Influences on other filmmakers is all well and good but the way films seep into language, commercials, political speech, etc can be more than a little interesting too.

I don't find Salo to be a bad film, but it is very difficult for me to get through. I guess that was kind of the point. It's something that everyone should watch once, but I don't see myself every sitting through it again.

Well, one of the other extras is an 84 min. feature about the guys who dress up as stormtroopers and Boba Fetts.

How terrible do the spoofs sound now???

I am a little late for the party, but this is one of the best months.. Any month with Salo in it is a given grand slam. Add in some Antonioni and the epic quote below and we have one for the ages.....

"That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older and they stay the same age."

Wow, another great month! It really isn't surprising any more . I like/am interested in all of them, yes, even in the Salo upgrade . To be honest, I have never seen Salo, but everyone talks so much about how disturbing it is that I NEED to see it. Harakiri is a great upgrade (More samurai films are always welcome). Identification of a Woman, Kuroneko and The Four Feathers sound great too, even thought I was hoping for L'Avventura or L'Eclisse if we were going to get some Antonioni but the price point is makes it a must. Dazzed and Confused is something I will need to see first before making the move, a bit on the fence for this one. Island of the Lost Souls is amazing but no more so than it's cover . Still waiting for Wild Strawberries and Y Tu Mama Tambien .

So why did they pick the 1939 version of The Four Feathers instead of the 2002 version?

I was kind of hoping for a Straw Dogs blu-ray in this announcement, with the remake right around the corner.

Fear & Loathing got a Criterion release relatively fast from is regular one. Dazed & Confused getting a Criterion release announced before the regular edition even hits stores. Dare we hope for a Brazil Criterion blu ray announcement in the near future?!?!

I do.

I do.
Especially since Universal and Criterion own different edits of the film.

(Oh, whew--For a second there, thought you were asking whether Criterion would turn down an Alexander Korda film they hadn't done yet. )

Oh boy, Antonioni again. And a minor film at that. Come on. Release the guy's classics and move on. Because he's made a few classics he should have a pass for everything? Can't understand all the interest for that guy, seriously. Call me an idiot if you will.

That being said, I will surely buy Kuroneko. Having watched Salo, I thought it was absolutely boring. Pasolini made a statement, and God bless him, but I surely don't wanna see people eat their feces in HD.
