I just finished Pale Flower and I'm still in that 'OMG. Best. Movie. Ever.' afterglow.

I love that feeling.

+1
I'm very glad I saw it and thought it was a very good film.
However, I don't think I would ever want to see it again.
I guess owning DVDs and blu-rays for me is about repeat viewings.

I can't wait until the Dazed and Confused upgrade to bluray.

That film holds a special spot in my heart.

In 1976, I was in junior high and I can really relate to the incoming freshman class in the film. 1976 was an excellent year.

I'm new to Criterion and don't own any and am after some help/advice.

Can anyone vouch for the following releases?

M
Videodrome
400 Blows
Life and Time of Harvey Milk
Diabolique

If anything, he could at least shoot a film well, unlike Jess Franco.

I feel like, overall between myself and the rest of the community, M and Diabolique are the closest thing to essentials that you listed. A lot of people will tell you that you've got to get The 400 Blows, too, but for me I'm not really big on that one, but that's personal opinion, as is me stating that you can't really go wrong with Videodrome.

Gotta agree, M and Diabolique. I haven't seen 400 Blows(yet) and Videodrome is really good, but wouldn't consider it essential. Harvey Milk, well, seen bout half of it. It was interesting, but definitely wouldn't consider it a must have.

Just got back from the States and my trip was timed nicely for me to take advantage of the Barnes & Noble sale - granted the first two stores I found in NJ near where I was staying had no movies at all. Then I hit the big Barnes & Noble in Manhattan but they only had a small selection and eventually managed to find one on our road trip to Atlantic City which had a great selection and I picked up:

Crumb
The Darjeeling Limited
The Night of the Hunter
Paris, Texas
Seven Samurai

No matter how often some people may try to justify it as art, or an important film, or a distrurbing in-you-face view of the horrors of absolute power, or a morality tale, or a warning, or however they try to wrap it into a meaningful package, Salo is one of the most loathsome and disturbing things ever committed to film. Once seen, it cannot be un-seen. It is basically snuff-film lite for the arthouse crowd.

But, hey, to each his own. If the film appeals because it is what it is and some feel the director bravely pushed the boundaries with it and therefore it has value, then by all means watch it.

What continues to baffle me is Criterion's reasons for upgrading some films ahead of others. We get Salo ahead of so many incredible movies waiting for upgrades....the Soviet Union films, the Hitchcocks, the Bergmans, Le Samourai, Picnic at Hanging Rock, etc. etc.

Ok, off my soap box....for now.
Hmmm...I may have to pick this one up before the sale is over. Also, you do realize Criterion has to get distribution rights then they have to do all the work that goes into re-mastering these films, which can't be easy from the high quality I've seen in the releases i've got recently. Personally, I'd like to know how to get in touch with the folks at Criterion so I can put in a few request, like for example David Cronenbergs Naked Lunch.

Videodrome and The Times of Harvey Milk are both great. You might also consider The Thin Red Line and Blow Out.

MUBI just reviewed POLYTECHNIQUE, a film I've been wanting to see for a couple years, but has yet to be released in the US. What do you think the chances are of Criterion finally bringing this to the States on BD? Seems like something right up their alley...

All on their way to Hulu I guess?

You mean the Canadian movie, right? Yes you are right that would probably work well into the Criterion collection. This subject is still a touchy one here in Montreal more then 20 years later too

I had a student write a paper on that movie this spring and I really wanted to see it. I was disappointed it isn't readily available in the US (from what I could tell).
