I'm at work and can't watch it but i can't be worse than the collector videos on youtube. There was one of a guy that had a dozen Criterions of which he never watched but said "most collectors have them because of the prestige of the collection".

Sadly, their release of Island of Lost Souls is going to be DVD only (so I'll pick up Criterion's).

Eureka Entertainment Ltd have struck a unique partnership with Universal Pictures to release select catalogue titles in Eureka's The Masters of Cinema Series in coordination with Universal's centenary celebrations in 2012. With the first releases coming this October and November - in time for Christmas - they will release the never-before-released-on-DVD Universal horror ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932), starring Charles Laughton, on DVD in October, and Orson Welles's TOUCH OF EVIL (1958) and Douglas Trumbull's SILENT RUNNING (1971) in November on limited edition Blu-ray only. A number of other titles are planned for Universal's centenary year in 2012.

Am I the only one who doesn't really see Touch of Evil as iconic or a masterpiece or even really all that noir?

Don't get me wrong, it's very good and I like it just fine and would probably pick it up if it were released in the US. I just don't get the breathless quality of some of the praise.

And then there's the other side of the coin with Silent Running being virtually - and unjustly - ignored over the years.

I hope Criterion has a similar deal with Universal. Would love to get Touch of Evil and Silent Running on BD from Criterion.

I was thinking the same thing...stupid PS3 being region locked...and too bad the unlocked players are expensive...

How far are you from the Canadian border? You can get a region free player at wal-mart for 78 bucks. The Seiki is pretty good for a cheapass player.

I think Charlton Heston has a lot to do with my ambivelence. He doesn't exactly melt into roles to begin with but Ramon Miguel Vargas?

That's a pretty tough sell.

(Of course, knowing me, if it ever does get a CC release I'll be in here the following July or Nov raving about how it's so much better than I remembered)
