Ok so I need some help choosing my next criterion purchase...I have gotten Antichrist, Fear and Loathing, Repulsion, and The Thin Red Line. I am thinking about either Seven Samurai or Solaris which do you think?

everyone is gonna be bland and boring and typical and say, Seven Samurai. but to me, that's the incorrect choice. Solaris is the correct choice. excellent, excellent film

Solaris is an excellent film (and a gorgeous one as well) but it strikes me as a somewhat riskier blind buy.

Yes - riskier than a b&w, three hour long, subtitled samurai movie

So far I bought 5 and watched them first time.
7 samurai - 4.5/5 A classic
The Magician - 4/5 I liked it. I felt climax might have been more strong.
Vivre sa vie - 4/5 Liked it as well. First 10 minutes of the film have only actors talking with their backs facing camera, I taught this is a blind buy I regret buying. But it picks up and the direction is very good.
8 1/2 - 4/5.
Wages of fear - 4.5/5 Superb Movie. 2nd half is thrilling.

I'd welcome it.

More people need to give Close-Up a shot. It's a terrific film.

I am really debating within myself if I should grab a copy of that one. Seems like a Criterion everyone recommends but few people suggest buying at all when asked. I was really close, I must say, but went with Repulsion instead. Will tell my uncle to get me one copy next month (I don't live in the States but have familiars that go almost every month so every time I want something I could just ask, in small amounts obviously ).

It's 11pm and still 90 degrees here - sounds like a good night to watch White Material.

If Seven Samurai and Wages of Fear is a 4.5/5, then what is a 5/5?

Thanks for the replies to my question about "must own" Criterion discs. A hard question to answer, and one that many get tired of hearing, I'm sure, but I appreciate the suggestions. I'll be heading to B&N after work to pick up a little something for myself. And if I can't decide, well, I'll just close my eyes and pick that way.

After that, I'll just need to find time to watch these new films. It's not as easy as it once once...not with a 2-year-old running around.

2/5 from me. wasn't the worst thing i've seen, but have absolutely no inclination to ever watch it again.
uhoh. I blind bought it. I'll probably feel the same way about it. While The Criterion Collection has allowed me to find some films that I consider the best ever made. It has also introduced me to movies I completely despised.

My suggestions:
Diabolique
Yojimbo
Sweet Smell of Success
Shock Corridor
Seventh Seal
Seven Samurai
The Last Emperor
High and Low
Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge

...may be a bit late in responding, but here are my suggestions (blu and DVD)...

thinking of great films in great packages...like the old $125 laserdiscs way back when... don't think you can go wrong with any of these

8 1/2, Seven Samurai, Seventh Seal, Modern Times, M, Beauty and the Beast, Throne of Blood, Rashomon, L'Avventura, Army of Shadows, Breathless, Solaris, My Man Godfrey, Rebecca, Scenes from a Marriage, Fanny and Alexander, Wages of Fear, Diabolique, Spartacus, Rules of the Game, La Strada, Ikiru, Ugetsu, Sansho, Pandora's Box, Great Dictator, Yojimbo, Sweet Smell of Success, and so many more...

Andrei Rublev is great, but non-anamorphic..

Sorry to jump in so late, but do you have the BBS America Lost and Found set yet? That's a must own, even with A Safe Place and Drive, He Said.

I'd also recommend:
Diabolique
Bigger than Life
Sweet Smell of Success
Black Narcissus
Howard's End
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

The Complete Monterey Pop

Just a few different ones. If you can get Pierrot Le Fou, go for it as it's OOP. My copy came in the mail today and I can't wait to watch it!

Edit: Whoops, you already have 2 of the titles I suggested. My bad.

So I like Samurai movies, but the trailer I saw for "7 samurai" was a little offputting- the action looked kind of cheesy and disjointed. Then again, it's just a trailer.

That being said, which one of these kurosawa films would you recommend, knowing that my tastes are decidedly more modern?

Sanjuro
Yojimbo
7 Samurai
Kagemusha

I think I may just get 7 Samurai, but Kagemusha looks pretty interesting as well.

I am also considering Diabolique and Red Shoes, although I can borrow RS if I want from a friend.

Just watched Salo last night. I had thought about blind-preordering it because of its reputation, but now I'm certainly glad I watched it first. It didn't gross me out or shock me or anything, since I'm pretty desensitized. That being said, however, watching what those people were forced to go through is like a big fist of depression punching you over and over in the face. I'm glad I watched it, though, for the sake of film history and all that, but it's one I would never want to watch again.

I'm cross-posting this (sorry!) just so someone has the time to make this happen during the current B&N sale:

FT: The Third Man, BD in original case w/booklet etc.

For these three CC BDs.

Naked
Beauty and the Beast
The Music Room

I've got the rest/ordered the rest already, so these three only please.
