Hopefully. I don't know who has the license to it, but there's no question it's a film Criterion would pick up. I was fortunate to have seen it in an old movie theater about six years ago, as part of my Heaven, Hell, and Judgment class with renowned professor Diane Christian.
Of course, I'd much rather see The Werckmeister Harmonies and The Return picked up first... |

I finally watched Days of Heaven last night. Similar to how I felt about The Thin Red Line, I liked the story itself, but not all of Malick's decisions as the filmmaker. It felt like too many of the scenes were cut short and that he didn't give enough time for the heart of the story to develop.
In the end, though, I really liked the film. I can't really explain why, either. It just worked somehow. While I was able to pinpoint a few of the technical aspects of the creation of the film that I didn't like, I'm yet to exactly figure out what I liked. I heard or read somewhere that Malick's films are more like poems then linear stories. And like many poems, for me, I can't quite figure out why Days of Heaven worked, I just know that it did. |

Hope I'm not going too overboard here, but these (to the best of my memory) are all the criterion collection films I've seen. Those highlighted with an asterisk I saw too long ago to recall more than a general opinion. Recommendations and arguments welcome!

My response was not directed to your, or any one post specifically. I just find it amusing that some of my favorite films are rated no better (and even worse) then the crap playing currently in any friendly neighborhood multiplex.

I have slowing been catching up with my as yet unwatched Criterions, and have in the past week seen the following
Black Moon, Bottle Rocket, Hunger, Fat Girl, House, Close-Up, People On Sunday and Antichrist. As someone who will watch anything, I am really impressed with the films Criterion release, so I may not have heard of some/most of them, but on average I love what I see, most recently People On Sunday. A wonderfull film with beautifull shots of Berlin pre-WW2, which I cannot wait to see again soon. Really enjoying some of the ratings you guys are sharing too, makes for great discussion, although we all have different opinions on which films we like and those that we don't, I do think though that to truely appreciate film, it needs to be seen more than once ![]() |

wow. didn't anticipate to see so many lists!
![]() there was one poster that i was agreeing with his scores (to varying degrees) about 75% of the time and then i saw he gave Last Year at Marienbad a 2/10, which i personally give a 4/5 or 4.5/5 to (it changes with every viewing it seems...). i don't agree, but i can certainly understand why many will hate it. which is weird, because even for some of my favorite movies i can still turn around and see why others would dislike it. and not just really obvious ones like Antichrist (which isn't a personal favorite but i do enjoy it immensely) where someone could / does dislike it because of the disturbing "we didn't need to see ALL that" scenes and other stuff, but films like Michael Clayton. many find it boring, i find it to be an absolute classic, but still can understand why people would find it boring, slow, dull and no reason to ever own it. i however, watch it about once a month ![]() |
