My orders always seem to be shipped from Louisville, KY. Not sure if that's always the case, but it's most frequent.

That's interesting. Amazon's main fulfillment center is in Lexington, KY which isn't too far from Louisville I think. Best Buy's main f. center is in Hebron, KY (which isn't too far from Lexington). Hebron is where the airport is I believe. Is that just a major coincidence? What's so special with KY?

How many other films we need to get from the New Year's teaser ? The only ones that come to my mind are Y Tu Mama Tambien and Wild Strawberries. Really waiting for this two releases; along with Carlos, they are my most anticipated ones. Does Criterion post teasers like that one every year? It would be nice to have another one for 2012 .

If you recall, last year around this time the BBS news started to leak...

I'll put some names out there:

Hitchcock
Cassavettes
Gorin
S. Ray
Kieslowski (already confirmed at some point).
If looking for an existing box that has yet to be upgraded to blu-ray I'm hoping for a Kurosawa set like the postwar set, or maybe something else Japanse like the Eclipse noire set (Nikkatsu Noire). Even though I'm trying not to spend money on DVD's anymore, I'm actually thinking about getting those on DVD during the sale, but I don't want to get burned having the blu-ray set announced months later. I seriously hope there is a flood of the Eclipse sets coming to blu-ray, as well as some of the lower priced "Essential Arthouse" making their way to blu. Would be nice to have some nice lower MSRP options, I dont' always need all the special features and booklets...

You already mentioned, but it would also be nice to see some type of Hitchock set (or even a single release), since there's hardly any hitchock on blu-ray period, let alone Criterion.

A Chaplin set seems like another obvious possibility. Criterion have the WHOLE Chaplin catelogue now, correct? So they can pretty much release whatever they want without licensing issue? Hopefully they make use of that for some type of box set.

Something more recent I want Criterion to release is Rossellini's War Trilogy. I may be getting confused but I think this one got released not many years ago in DVD, in fact, I believe Criterion already were putting out BDs...

Amazon says that one was released 1/2010 but DVD only. So who knows.

Nikkatsu Noire was released 8/25/2009, again DVD only, but that's on the Eclipse brand (the one you want is at least under Criterion label)..

Both were released after Criterion started doing blu's. That's kind of interesting, might be an indication that no blu-rays are coming - otherwise why not release simultaneously? They haven't used their "Essential Arthouse" or "Eclipse" labels for any blu-rays yet. I hope they do, because at least that would mean lower cost and more box sets...

Hey guys, I am a huge western fan and bought Stagecoach like 1.5 years ago.
I just finished Big Jake for the first time (btw it was not as good as I was hoping it would be.) Anyhow, I want to watch Stagecoach and I have very little experience with movies this old and was hoping to get a few pointers on how to get the most out of Stagecoach. I am a huge John Wayne fan but most of his work that I have seen is newer than the Searchers, 1956. Thanks.

There's obviously influences of Camus and Celine, but I know theres a novel out there with the same kind of drifting, solipsistic mentality in the protagonist who can't stay with any normalcy of society and is simply to intelligent for his own good. I've been racking my brains trying to find the best literary parallel but coming up short, so if any other fellow readers out there can enlighten me I'd love to hear it.
I'd say maybe Notes from Underground?

I really want to answer your question and help you out but there's a problem, I don't get what you're asking? How do you watch Stagecoach on blu? I don't own that one yet, but I guess just watch it like you do your other blus. I'm unfamiliar with the extras on the disc since I don't own it, so watch those after you finish the film? Read the book included too, before or after viewing, your choice!

I was going to suggest maybe he needs to get "in costume" to get in the mood.

I was just trying to say that I have a hard time appreciating black and white, the tiny 4:3 image, mono sound, etc. .......I guess I just gotta watch it, after all it is THE western that gave the genre its start, no? it can't be that difficult to enjoy. I think I heard either Steven Spielberg or George Lucas once say that Ford was a director's director, in other words Ford basically helped make them better directors.

Everything (well except for the politics, but that's everywhere). Oh and fun fact, our grass isn't blue. It's just that IT'S ACTUALLY GRASS, so it's green, which is a color that can't be found in some places.

Criterion's shipping warehouse is in KY too. It's prob cheaper in KY for these companies to base here.

I don't think there's anything we can say to help with this.
Basically, you just need to keep watching old films to get used to them.
A film's aesthetic is partly defined by its time and place, which often affects our perception of it.
I've personally found over decades of watching all types of films, that I'm less concerned with its film stock, its sound, its language, its genre, artifice or realism.
However, my wife and some friends get very distracted by a film's age.
As for Stagecoach, it's a brilliant film, so keep watching it until you like it

If you're not worried about spoilers you could check out the booklet and a supplement or two first. That could put things in a little better perspective.

Once they're on the road you could also amuse yourself by trying to remember how many other westerns you've seen Monument Valley in (hint: a lot)

Whoa, i just discovered that Terrence Malick, who seems to be a Criterion darling to most of this board, worked on the script of Drive, He Said, a film most posters seem to hate, although not as much as A Safe Place.

Got High and Low and Leon Morin today. High and Low looks nice but again suffers from some completely unnecessary sharpening. Leon Morin on the other hand looks fantastic. Probably as good as it can get without being a scan from the original negative.

Well, it's not like we watch Malick movies for the scripts.

Last night I watched the final film in my BBS set, The King Of Marvin Gardens and have to say, I didn't like it. Nicholsons character I liked and found him intriguing, the film itself didn't do anything for me. I did however enjoy all the other films in the set, including A Safe Place

Both the release of The Makioka Sisters and the upcoming Identification Of A Woman are what you're asking for in a Criterion blu-ray, basically. It's been a while since Criterion has released a title in the "Essential Arthouse" line, so these lower-priced, sans-feature blu-rays may be Criterion's forth-going decision in regards to titles without any features, or titles that they think may not sell as many copies.
