As something grows more popular, the core audience becomes a much broader representation of the society as a whole. In this case, you had high profile shows illustrating this effect in neat correspondence to a lot of growing upheaval in greater society. If anything, Altamont was more truly representative of the late '60s than Monterey.

I guess the reason for my smug response is that it seems obvious as the times rapidly grew darker that it would be reflected in youth culture. Maybe your point is that it is rare to see such a quick progression captured on film?
Yes, my comment was just a comment on how rapidly the Hippie Counterculture died, and was asking if anyone else felt that Altamont & Monterey were acurate depections of their respective years within the countercuture. I'm not at all surprised at the difference between the two, as I have studied this period, but to see it on film was particularly captivating. It had more "oomph" and a greater impact than just reading texts on that era.

Also, I consider 1967 to be mid-1960s, rather than early, 1960/1961 are still quite in that 1950s mindset. But that's just my opinion and as CCfixx says, anyone with an opinion in this thread doesn't know what they are talking about.

End of an era. Watching it and knowing that in a few short months, Altamont was going to happen. Many of the big name performers were going to be dead within a short time from drugs and alcohol. Woodstock would become a brand-name, and have an Altamont like revival concert in 1999. Festival Express is another concert that's like that. That's why I found it disenchanting. The music was excellent, but it's still sad. Perhaps poignant would have been a better word.

I have to agree. I used to think Woodstock was so awesome, and it was. But watching it now does make me feel a bit sad when I really think about things.

You mean disenchanting to you and yes, poignant would be a better word. Woodstock was by no means the end of an era, there were plenty of Gi-normous free festivals that weren't bummers that followed.

Actually there were other Woodstock revivial concerts, I think Woodstock II was in '79 or something...

That is a pretty good idea. Instead of reading what celebs' top 10 is on Criterion's site, let's list our ten fav Criterion releases here. NO RATINGS PLEASE, just your 10 fav releases by Criterion. So no list of .5's and all that junk that nobody cares about. Interested though to see what everyone thinks are the releases they would pick.

I support this idea. Maybe I will make my top ten list later.

Got 7 Criterions from B&N today but the slip for my copy of Videodrome is all askew. The collection number on the front is inside the slip and 1/4 of the title on the spine is on the front. Would it be smoother to ask Criterion for a replacement or should I ask B&N for a replacement but I don't know if it's just my copy or if they got a bad batch?

Good luck either way. B&N's customer service sucks, and Criterion hates people outside of NA.

Fine, Top 10 releases without ratings, from what I currently have watched/own. Subject to change once I get the 9 I ordered in the mail. Most of it is based on how much I like the film though, rather than how nice the PQ/AQ is, and special features. These are films I can watch over and over again:
1. BBS America Lost and Found - And not just because of Head, this set is one of the best they've done because almost all of the films are top notch.
2. Black Narcissus
3. The Leopard
4. The Complete Monterey Pop
5. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
6. Charade
7. Gimme Shelter
8. The Sweet Smell of Success
9. Night of the Hunter
10. Senso

Well yes, it was personal opinion as to how disenchanting the concert was, as I'm reflecting on it from a modern perspective. I would have enjoyed it if I didn't know what the future was going to bring. I vastly prefer Monterey to Woodstock anyways, if we must rehash that old debate. I enjoyed the acts there much more. Again, personal opinion. If it wasn't for Monterey & the Newport festivals, you wouldn't have had Woodstock:P Most people seem to forget about Monterey, and even Newport, despite the whole Dylan controversy.

Woodstock '94 apparently was decent, well decent in comparison to '99.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival_Express - I want Criterion to buy the rights to this an upgrade it to BD. I love my DVD copy. It's another poignant, Canadian rock festival.

My top 10, in no particular order, but limited to what is available on BD (to keep it on-topic with Blu-ray.com )

Mystery Train
The Third Man
Last Year at Marienbad
Wages of Fear
Wings of Desire
El Norte
The Last Metro
M
Night of the Hunter
Seventh Seal

EDIT:

Just looking at my collection I realized I didn't have "Fat Girl" listed as owned..... I wonder if I missed any other ones now!

EDIT #2: Yep... missed solaris too.....

EDIT #3: I missed all of May's announcements apparently

I thought the story was very interesting. I really thought Deborah Kerr was pretty good in her role. Yes, it was a bit predictable with the little bit at the end, but it was still thrilling. Sister Ruth was all kinds of awesome, and that one shot of her eyes after she left the order was creepy as hell. Jean Simmons was interesting to see, as it was her first film role.

Also, the film came out at an interesting period in Indian history, the same year as Indian Independence. I know a lot of people find the film dated and hellishly racist, by today's standards (Check out the IMDB board if you don't believe me) but I still enjoyed the film. It's also one of the few Criterions my mother enjoys watching too. So some sentimentality there.

My top 10 Criterions available on Blu-ray are in no particular order:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Yojimbo
The Third Man
Repulsion
Days of Heaven
Beauty and the Beast
The Thin Red Line
Solaris
Night of the Hunter
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

Granted there are quite a few I have yet to watch, including Seven Samurai and The Killing which are sure to supplant a couple on the list.

Fair enough, the funny thing is I actually watched it with my mom and she hated it. She was demanding to now why it was part of the Criterion Collection. She eventually decided it was because of the films technical accomplishments, it was almost entirely shot in a studio.

Which is actually pretty impresive, as the scenery looks so realistic. They shot a lot of the Jungle scene's at some guy's garden as well.
