surprising to see that none of your lists contain Kes or Still Walking, which are both masterpieces in my book.

I personally prefer the hard cases, just because I know the digipacks will start to look worn out after a couple of years. Otherwise I wouldn't really care. It's almost impossible to keep them "new" looking.

Apparantly they are still producing certain titles in digipack form, even recent releases. Sweet Smell of Success I ordered from the website, and was surprised it came in a digipack case since I thought they did away with that. Upon visiting the stores I also notice Videodrome seemed to all be in digipack style cases. I don't think there is even an option for a hard case on those titles.

I picked up Seven Samurai recently, another one in a digipack case, and again I'm not sure there is even an option for a standard case.

I've read that it's low wages and and little to no worker protections in KY and TN that make those states the most frequently used states for warehouses. It's basically a race to the bottom, and the southeast truely is the bottom of the barrel.

i perfectly understand your point, but they look so freakin' classy though. especially Seven Samurai, and its a really sturdy one, so i don't think you should be worried about it. definitely one of my fav digipacks.

There were rumors Robocop might be coming. Next year is the anniversary. That'd be sweet.

they are still coming out with digipak like packaging for certain releases (Breathless, Videodrome, Seven Samurai, etc.)--that's true--but NOT the original type of packaging used for the bd releases, which is what I particularly don't like--with the "paper sleeve" (that is open at both ends) over a cardboard foldout which contains a plastic disc hub.
THAT specific type of packaging was only used on 10 or so of the initial Criterion blu-ray releases and they definitely aren't making that type of packaging any more.
that's why I'm so surprised that B&N still has The Last Emperor like that.
(would have certainly assumed they would have long gotten case versions)
that type of packaging has supposedly been OOP for over 2 years now.

Narrowing it down really is difficult
In sort-of order:
The Thin Red Line
Seven Samurai
Vivre Sa Vie
Yojimbo/Sanjuro
Paths of Glory
Summer Hours
Army Of Shadows
Sweet Smell of Success
Diabolique
The Double Life of Veronique

I have the BFI edition of The Leopard, but if I had the Criterion, it would top my list.
Summer Hours, Army Of Shadows, Sweet Smell of Success, and Diabolique were all blind-buys and now they're some of my favourite films

Still Walking was another blind-buy for me and we watched a couple of days ago.
Loved it a lot, but need more time for it to settle with me. Looking forward to re-watching it in the near-future.
It also made me wish for Criterion to upgrade Tokyo Story to blu-ray.

I have not. I have only seen it in stores in the digipack case. I ordered mine online, and I doubt that I'll get a plastic case, but I would not turn it down. It would save me $5 plus shipping. I don't have a favorite Criterion list yet, I have not seen a lot of the titles, and some I have not seen in years. So no list for me yet.

My order of Chungking Express from Amazon is arriving tomorrow. Is there a good chance I'll get it in the plastic case?

Watched one of my CC blind buys today, Black Narcissus, and I guess I just didn't get it. I thought it was a dumb movie. The booklet glorifies the movie as though it's a magnificent depiction of repressed and unrequited emotions, but I didn't think that it really depicted much of this at all. I thought the plot and the characterizations were sparse... many characters are presented with little development over the course of a short movie. I was put off by the movie's filming style with the frequent dissolves and facial close-ups, and I was especially distracted by the rampant color flickering throughout the film that mostly affected blues (the sky) and whites (the sisters' garb and faces). 3/10, I will be selling this one.

It probably didn't help that I preceded it with a rewatch of Tarkovsky's dense and moody film Solaris earlier today. 9/10, that one. The transfer on the Criterion blu-ray looks magnificent!
