Hm. I think you should look at it from another viewpoint. The film is Japanese and the Japanese culture is totally different (especially in 1587, which the film is settled in). So they also have a different style of expressing themselves.
Did you ever watch a medieval Shakespeare film? They also act different from what most people are used to see.
About that actor with that goofy look... Which one are you refering to? Toshiro Mifune?

Competition:[*]PHILIPPE GARREL - UN ÉTÉ BRULANT[/LIST]

Garrel's name should be included at the top of your post, considering he isn't a "Criterion Fav", and I think his work is better than those listed.

Criterion should show some people Garrel (in that I mean release his early films). One of my favs films from this past decade was by him (Regular Lovers, you can get on dvd already) and hopefully one day his films with Nico can see releases (where Criterion should step in, but I doubt it).

I think he's referring to that old man who gives out the goofy facial expressions. The one
[Show spoiler]who dies during the long battle sequence

How does the picture quality of the Criterion DVD version of The Great Dictator look? I checked DVDbeaver and I was going to assume the Criterion will look like the Warner Bros DVD.

I picked up the blu version for me and I'm wanting to get the DVD version for a coworker who's very much into WW II. It seems all of the blu's extras are on the second dvd.

I love the old farmer that you are talking about, some of his facial expressions and physical gestures are priceless.

I tend to gravitate towards characters like this. Angu Ayah in Black Narcissus is another of my favs.

Thanks! You have encouraged me to email and ask about a few damaged things that bug me to no end.

I've learned never to envision what to expect from a movie or hype it. I actually psych myself into thinking its probably not going to be that good. When ever you build expectations you will almost always be let down. Just like a book to a movie your mind has its own unique way of 'seeing' what you imagine. I'm almost never let down by movies and always find something to make the journey worthwhile.

When it ships. At least in my experience with them.

Oh it was an enjoyable film, it's just that I'd have to be in the right mood to really enjoy it, and I clearly wasn't when I watched it. I think once I do a wishlist purge, and get the ones I really want, I may go back to ones like TGD watch them again, and add them back as the second wave of CCs I want. Right now I have a wishlist of about 30 CC films on BD, and I need to pick and choose which ones I really want, instead of blind buying willy nilly, as much as I enjoy blind buying.

What do you think the chances are of Criterion releasing La Dolce Vita? Seems tailor-made for them.

Yes you should give it another go, you owe it to yourself. I fully agree what you're saying about great appreciation for films comes with maturity, yeah I like the avatar too, where did you find the full size pic?

I kinda agree. I liked Seven Samurai however, its not that great to me. Maybe because I've seen Yojimbo before it....still I prefer Yojimbo and High and Low over it.

I pre-ordered The Killing as well and they charged it now, but I don't believe they process it through until it ships. I had a similar situation with the Star Wars BD set. They charged it, and it sat there about 1 week before it came off my charge (my CC company indicated that if they don't process the charge in 1 week it automatically comes off). They probably just want to make sure the account is valid and has enough credit.

I've seen a few Orson Welles films and enjoyed them: Citizen Kane, The Stranger, etc.

Is the Mr. Arkadin 3-DVD worth picking up w/ the $8 off coupon?
I have never seen the film before.
