I have never seen the film before.
It's funny, I remember liking it but I remember virtually nothing about it.

Hardly a ringing endorsement, I guess

Slim to none since E1 Entertainment has been sitting on the rights to it since last year.

This is the key, as far as I'm concerned. I like Seven Samurai, but I think Kurosawa has made better movies. Ikiru is more deep and philosophically satisfying. Yojimbo and The Hidden Fortress are more viscerally effective. I have yet to see High and Low, but plan to remedy that soon.

UPS brought me a package.... yeah!

Got some movie about a clergyman, some movie about a popular Talking Heads song, and some Up and Down samurai flick that I already have.

[Show spoiler] I can safely return the extra copy of High And Low now.....

ah thanka you all! This is frikin' sweet! However, at second glance, this doesn't really do much for me. I'll still try to use it, but I can't think of anything I want during the sale that would be over $40.

Haven't bought a DVD in a long long time. However, I put aside Throne of Blood at Barnes to pick up later. Never seen it, but, I do love me some Kurosawa.

Throne of Blood is excellent. I'm in no huge rush for another AK samurai upgrade but this would be my first pick.

Now these are some fantastic news!! Thanks a lot for the link . I really want this film in the Collection. In my eyes, it deserves a place in it more than most other contemporary films. One of the best things I have seen in a lot of time. The visceral feel to it is amazing and the themes are touched with great respect without being overkill. Also, from that post where Becker said Certified Copy was "minor" Kiarostami, I wonder if Criterion considers upgrading Taste of Cherry . If that isn't "major" Kiarostami I don't really know what else is.

I watched Howards End this week and enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. Great to see Helena Bonham Carter in a role in which she's not all crazy. Deals a lot of with economical and social status, draped in an early 1900s backdrop. Slow moving and long, it sounds rather like a recipe for disaster--but the nice cast of characters really help drive the film with some subtly intense moments.

Despite the later era, there is something rather Austen/Alcott about the writing and development. Which is never a bad thing, imho.

It's a very "YMMV" type of thing from people have been saying.

1) Some are not able to use it all in combination with the sale.
2) Some were only able to use it for expensive box sets like BBS etc....
3) Some were able to use it for single movies that had a price over $40 retail before the 50% off (such as Night of the Hunter and Seven Samurai)
4) Some were able to use it on any title that was $39.99 before the sale, so basically making a single movie (Like Mystery Train) $39.99 - 50% off - 10% member discount = $17.99 - $8 = $10 TOTAL
5) Some people were able to nab multiple movies and use it over and over.... I heard several people who got 3 BDs for $34 or so out the door....

Again... it depends on the store/cashier/etc... Basically the "system" will accept the coupon for any title that was $39.99 before the sale.... if you can get the employee to scan it, then it will work.

The people who have the most trouble are the ones who run into employees who claim they're getting scammed etc.... so just turn on the charm, and best of luck to you!

a man as ugly as me must have charm, otherwise I wouldn't be married!

So you're telling me that not only do I have to charm the ladywife into letting me purchase more movies, but I also have to charm the cashier (him/her) into letting me use a coupon!?

Mostly excited about Cronenberg and Polanski's films. I really hope both to be critically acclaimed or at least well-received. It has been interesting to see how Cronenberg has evolved as a filmmaker. Not evolution in the sense of getting better since most of his films are really great but relating to the themes he commonly touches upon.

Does anybody of you know if Criterion is going to release a Blu-ray of Max Ophüls' The Earrings of Madame de...?
Because I'm thinking about picking up the DVD, but if there's a chance of an upgrade coming, I'm going to wait for it.
Thanks.

Bob...the Monkees were NOT the High School Musical teens. (Although the HSM'ers sure act like they came out of a mid-60's sitcom. )

Although to be fair, it was Mike Nesmith who wrote and directed the sour, snarky deconstructionist 30th-anniversary TV special to promote the "Justus" album/tour, so Bob's not the only one with too many personal demons.

Quote:
Mike wasn't the only Monkee who wrote great songs. Peter and Micky had a few great ones. Quite a few of Mike's songs became hits for others. The song "Different Drum," that made a young Linda Ronstadt as star with the Stone Ponys? Mike wrote that.
Leading to the funny in-joke in Ep. 56(?) where the boys try to disrupt an amateur-hour show, and Mike pretends to be a nervous folksinger:

Quote:
Frank Zappa
Yep, that would be Monkees Blow their Minds, the second last episode of the series. He was Mike's pick for a guest star The previous episode had Charlie Smalls (The Wiz songwriter), who was Davy's pick, and the following Episode would have folk singer Tim Buckley, who was Micky's pic. Had the series continued, Peter would have brought on Janis Joplin (who he was "dating," for lack of a better word and out of politeness, at the time) or Pete Seeger.
It's even funnier if you know Frank & Mike were deliberately heckling Davy's interminably episode-stopping Smalls interview the week before: (5:15)

The Monkees were trying to get out of their dying kiddy-show format, and wanted to move the series into more of a network variety-show format with guest interviews and comedy sketches, but it was too hard to break out of their image.

(That's what I like about this board, you can find expert-defender fans of just about anything. )
