I'd welcome it. I'd also welcome Paper Moon if they can pry it away from its owners (who probably aren't going to blu-ray it any time soon).

Speaking of Leon Morin, I wonder what's holding up the review.

Maybe they sent The Killing by mistake.

Hmmm, realised I was about to post a smaller novel (with most of it being quotes), so I have spoilertagged the quotes...

I know B&N likes to delay shipments for Canadians by 2 days for some reason, or at least they have for me. But most of my orders seem to be sent out on an ad hoc basis, and will arrive whenever they feel like it. Also, many of my orders end up being split into multiple parcels. We also can't track the packages because they're done through a broker, and Canada Post has no idea what the tracking numbers they give us are. Do they treat all their customers this way, or is it just us Canadians?

Canadians and people in Sweden in that case.

That, as well as some items being cancelled, has been the norm for me in all previous dealings with B&N.

I usually pay for Expedited International Shipping, it only cost a little more and USUALLY cut quite a large bit of shipping time off. However, shipments during previous sales from B&N have almost always been late and when I contact them about it they claim no knowledge of a shipping method called Expedited International Shipping.

Not just in their online store, but in their B&M stores as well. They claim it has something to do with the regulations Chapter-Indigo have set up, which makes them "illegal." I can't understand that at all, because Amazon, and many other eBook readers are sold up here with no issues. They would generate so many sales if they opened Nook and Nook Colour sales up to Canadians. Chapters-Indigo has become a pain to deal with, as their prices are high, and they're trying to run a monopoly.

That's really strange, I have a colleague from The Netherlands that have one and as far as I know he didn't have any problems when buying it.

--------------------------------------------------------

And now, probably because I have been ranting so much about how bad B&N can be, they go and first do something like this:

I opened the mail and they had shipped a replacement copy of People On Sunday

Considering that I once spent an hour on the phone (calling from Sweden!) just to get to a somewhat OK resolution of an issue they had caused, this was almost mindblowing in comparison. Previous requests for replacements has always resulted in the answer "We don't send replacements outside of the US, you will have to re-order the item!".

I wonder if this was handled by a summer temp or a newly hired person that hadn't had a proper introduction into the customer service part of B&N or if this is their new policy for damaged items?

and then they go ahead and ship my order containing 17 Criterions on the day they claimed they would ship them (when "High and Low", "Life During Wartime" and "Léon Morin, Priest" was released) in one big shipment.

The only thing missing is that they have packed the Blu-Rays sufficiently to not be damaged and they arrive within the expected timeframe, but I'll believe that when I see it...

I ordered 6 Criterion blu-rays from B&N during the sale. I got at email saying that they were shipped on July 13th. I still haven't received as of today, and none of the shipping numbers that they gave me work! Is this normal when dealing with B&N from Canada? I want to order 2 more before the sale is over but am having second thoughts. When is the sale over anyways?

It's over by the end of the month. I'm trying to not order more stuff but I keep reading reviews. I'm itching to get Pale Flower now.

I thoroughly enjoy Pale Flower. not to be the evil devil on your shoulder saying "Buy it NOW!"

My copy of Yi Yi arrived. That should be it for me in this sale, unless I watch my Netflix copy of Leon Morin, Priest tomorrow and decide that I HAVE to have it.

When I ordered from B&N to Canada last year the shipping delay was enormous... and that was without any postal strike issues. The accuracy of their tracking was also questionable. I guess in a way this is good news (?) as I'm saying I think slow delivery is 'normal' for them and your shipment probably isn't lost, just following B&N's slow practices.

Mine either. I love their sale, but their times from purchase to shipping are horrible. Then again as long as they keep having these sales they could ship my Criterions taped to the back of a turtle and I'd still be happy.

I would think that this would make a very good addition to the CC if they could get a hold of the rights.
wow, I just watched that one for the first time about a week ago myself.
absolutely awesome film.
film noir is my favorite film genre for sure, and I have about 75 or so titles in my collection now.
It's such a shame that most of them will probably never get released on blu-ray, but thankfully most of the dvds are very watchable.
Bogart is my favorite actor.

The Maltese Falcon definitely counts. It's oft considered the greatest noir film ever made, though I disagree. And, yes, The Third Man is noir, too, though I don't often see it mentioned in noir film discussions.

But after viewing Kiss Me Deadly, Sweet Smell of Success, and (Japanese noir?) Pale Flower, I definitely want more films of this ilk. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be alot out there in blu-ray. It would be nice to see Criterion fill that void. It's not just "noir" that's MIA either, but it seems like the entire era of 1930's gangster films isn't represented at all on blu-ray either. I'd like to see at least a couple of key titles released by Criterion. If not Criterion, the studios need to get the ball rolling on these.

Back catalog is Blu-Ray's failing at the moment. There are some great ones out there, but they don't seem to be the studios' priority. This is no surprise, as even with DVD, the initial focus was on current or recent titles, with back catalog titles being released only because they essential ran out of recent titles and the demand for more product was there.

The other "problem" is what seems to me to be a common perception with Blu-Ray that the format is only worthwhile for big splashy widescreen action films with 7-channel audio. I've had people look at me curiously for wanting to buy BDs of movies like M and Metropolis and Casablanca. They say "It's just black-&-white and mono sound. Isn't DVD good enough for that?"

It's not just 30s-era gangster films that are under-represented on Blu-Ray, but 30s and 40s films in general. I'd kill to be able to get BDs of Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Captain Blood (and other Errol Flynn swashbucklers), the run of Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers RKO musicals, the run of Val Lewton horror films (also from RKO), etc.

The Warner Noir collections are aces. Especially the first one with The Asphalt Jungle (which is tied with The Killing as my favorite noir film), Murder, My Sweet, and Out of the Past. I'd also recommend the first WB Gangsters collection with White Heat, Public Enemy, Angels with Dirty Faces, Little Caesar, and The Petrified Forest.

Damn, one of my Criterion's has a crack in the hub, if I write Jon Mulvaney, will criterion send me a replacement of the title?(it's not oop) It's been year since I purchased the blu-ray from the retailer.

I have never had a blu ray hub crack until now, and of course it would have to happen to a Criterion title! (just my rotten luck)

The funny thing is that I'm extremely careful on how I handle ALL my media (blu's/DVD/CD'/vinyl/books)

Mine was: Beauty and the Beast, Cronos, High and Low, The Magician, The Night of the Hunter, Paths of Glory, and Solaris.

There are a few others I'd have grabbed if the local B&N had them (I don't do mail order if I can avoid it. Fortunately, there's a b&m B&N nearby). It's too bad The Killing isn't streeting until 2 weeks after the sale is over.
