just out of curiosity if anyone would like I would be willing to trade my outlaw sixties eclipse boxset , it has a little tear on the outside but you can notice it if you look, but I never even got though all the movies for high and low blu ray, and makioka sisters, if you think its fair, or maybe one of them since I don't watch the eclipse set really

  • The Great Dictator
  • Kagemusha
  • The Thin Red Line
  • For All Mankind
  • Le Cercle Rouge
  • Days of Heaven
  • People on Sunday

i'll get all of them eventually, but now i'll be buying only 5 and i'm unable to choose, so any help and tips would be great guys.
I highly recommend For All Mankind. It is a hauntingly beautiful journey through the Apollo program. Classifying it as documentary does not do it justice, it is more like a lyrical cinematic ballet of rockets, men, and the Moon.

I can also highly recommend Repulsion.

Of the remainder I have seen, and to give you 5 total, I'd recommend Walkabout, Kagemusha, and one of the Malick films. I would choose Days of Heaven over the Thin Red Line. I think it is the better film. The Thin Red Line took a while to grow on me and after repeated viewings I can say I like it, but I find all the character voiceovers a bit much for a war film. It makes me think of what the last days of the battle for Guadalcanal would be like if it was fought by grad students, angst-ridden philosophers, and a few future Criterion fans.

I have bought, but have not yet watched, Pale Flower, People on Sunday, The Great Dictator, Black Narcissus, and Le Cercle Rouge.

Somehow that managed to escape my notice. Thanks.

Sadly they are throwing in Ambersons as a DVD bonus. Maybe that's actually good new for you, or maybe not. I guess some are happy that this is even getting DVD at all. Having never seen the film it's interesting that a major Orson Welles film that never got a DVD release, is finally making an appearance.
Yeah, it's curious that it was never released on DVD. I have the Criterion LD of it, which was an excellent transfer with nice extras.

It would just be nicer if it got a proper blu-ray mastering. Maybe it will after a year or two
Maybe the folks at WHV are hoping to uncover the long-lost-and-presumed-destroyed Welles cut of the film.

I don't think I have plans to buy the set as usually "deluxe editions" are a little overpriced for me.
Well, at the moment, Amazon's pre-order price for the edition with The Magnificent Ambersons bonus disc is only $5.00 more than the edition without.

True but that's only the difference between the $50 Ultimate Edition with exclusive content (Ambersons dvd) and the $45 Ultimate Edition without the Ambersons.

If I didn't kinda like the look of the book and think we'lll be well into 2012 before single editions are even announced I'd be tempted to hold off as well.

In fact, I still haven't completely decided whether to let the preorder go through (through I'm strongly leaning that way which means even if I decide to cancel I probably won't get around to it)

I haven't looked (I already have a copy), but as I recall from years past, titles that Criterion licensed from Disney (like, say, Armageddon) were produced by Criterion, and labelled Criterion, but were actually distributed by Buena Vista. Perhaps they had a similar deal with Paramount for Benjamin Button, which precludes it from the sale. A quick look at B&N's page shows that the Criterion DVD of Armageddon isn't listed, either.

Even if you catch most of it, I didn't find it particularly funny or meaningful. At times it was visually interesting, and it had a unique sense of style, which was interesting at times. That's about the best thing I could say about this one, "interesting at times". I can't tell you how bored I was by the end of the 2+ hours. I guess the fact that for the last 30+ minutes I just wanted it to be over, didn't help me find any of the hidden humor within the scenes.
Shrug. Well, I've always believed that there's nothing more subjective than a sense of humor except maybe a sense of beauty. Personally, I love the four Tati films that Criterion released on LD and/or DVD. I will admit, though, that Playtime and Trafic aren't quite as amusing as M. Hulot's Holiday or Mon Oncle.

God. I remember back when the only way to get it on DVD was as a bonus disc in an edition of the De Palma remake.

Similarly, until Criterion got their hands on it, the only way to get a non-Public Domain edition of the original Charade on DVD was as a bonus with the Demme remake, The Truth About Charlie.

And I still think that the only way to get Death Takes a Holiday on DVD was as a bonus with the Brest remake, Meet Joe Black.

Yes. Yes, it is. Supernatural is a TV series on the CW network. Which is damning, I'll admit, but it manages to overcome that defect. For me, it's one of the very few must-see shows on the broadcast networks.

On their website, CCBB isn't 50% off, in store it is, or was for me anyways. It rang up just fine. Don't know about any of the DVDs.

Well, I'm glad to make one schoolboy's fantasy come true.

Remind me around Halloween, and I'll see if I can't pull-off the transformation for you... shaved legs and all. If Pee-Wee Herman did it in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, then I can do it, too.

Nuns shaving their legs? Someone didn't go to Catholic school.

It looks like you are going to need to orchestrate a new excuse.

I'm listening to the Diabolique commentary right now. It might be one of the most irritating commentaries I've heard in a while. This woman is making me like this movie less. What the hell?

B&N coupons, best source is a thread on another forum that TALKS about DVDs, wonderful guy named LASERMOVIES keeps it updated.

Amazon BF sales, it seems like some titles were on sale, some may have even hit price points comparable to B&N. I recommend you look at the price history of a specific title on this here website and see if the price last November meets your expectations. I thought that Red Shoes fit in that category, but the price history shows me I misremembered.

well Beta, I tried to use the $8 off one blu coupon yesterday but it didn't work. I convinced the manager of the store to scan it, but it didn't work at all he said.

So here's what I've purchased during the sale so far:

Fear and Loathing
Solaris
Le Cercle Rouge
Kiss Me Deadly

That's it. I really want to pick up:

The Great Dictator
Blow Out
Smiles of a Summers Night
Pale Flower
Beauty and the Beast
High and Low

But now that I've confirmed that the coupon doesn't work, I don't know whether I'll be purchasing anymore.

Canceled High and Low from B&N since they still haven't shipped it and my other order from them is also experiencing delays. I'd rather wait a few months or even pay a few more bucks if it means actually getting my item in a timely manner. One of the worst place I've ordered from, ever.
