Life During Wartime review is up. I think this may be about as negative a review of a movie released by Criterion as I have seen on this site. The Criterion presentation is superb, as usual, but the movie is not. Thanks to Dr. Svet for a great review; in fact, his review of this movie neatly summarizes it better than any other I have read.

Damn, way to oversell it. It's just a summery of 3/4 of the plot and then a couple vague paragraphs about the movie's themes. This is a movie that doesn't work, but the review is pretty tepid in it's opinion of why. It doesn't even mention this is a direct sequel to another movie.

Weird.

My B&N haul on this sale:

1. Jalsaghar (The Music Room)
2. The Darjeeling Limited
3. The Seventh Seal

All blu-rays arrived in a couple of days..will do it again, if they come up with a similar offer later this year!

You can't go wrong with either of them, but Seventh Seal seems to stand out to me more than M. Don't let the avatar get in the way of the opinion--- just like the cover art more.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the responses. I wound up with M but my desire to purchase the others presses on. In due time though.

Good point about the missing mention of it being a sequel to Happiness. However, not sure what you mean about overselling; I did not find his opinion tepid at all. It is a very good short review on the film, and I appreciate that the reviewer is being honest about how he feels toward the movie. For once, a Criterion on this site gets a mediocre review and a recommendation of "for fans only". Having seen it, I wholeheartedly agree.

I have no interest in Life During Wartime, I did not like Happiness at all. I won't lose any sleep if I don't see it.

Just a quick note

I did not mention that it is a sequel to Happiness because I do not believe that it is one. As confirmed by director Solondz, this film was an experiment -- recasting the whole film with different actors -- not a conventional sequel.

Agreed - that artwork just lured me in big-time. I plan to watch the movie soon and from what I've read I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'm a huge Seventh Seal fan and this movie influenced that and Bergman's entire repertoire heavily.

I would of loved for Soderbergh to make more films in Castro/Guevara's history, in general the Bay of Pigs Invasion, but funding and backlash from politics made things hard with even making these 2. Oh well, they weren't perfect anyways.

Went in to B&N today intending to pick up one last Criterion. Couldn't decide between "Wages of Fear", "Bottle Rocket", and "Stagecoach." Stood there for half an hour like an idiot. Later during my screening of "Cowboys and Aliens" I realized I needed to pick up "Stagecoach." It will be mine tomorrow.

Really, most of the Criterions I wanna buy haven't even been released yet ("The Killing", "Dazed and Confused"). So I'll do the bulk of my pickup during November.

Not a huge haul but I picked up:

The Seventh Seal
High and Low
Ride With The Devil
The Times of Harvey Milk
Paris, Texas

Definitely planning on picking up The Killing and Dazed and Confused.

But isn't that worth mentioning? In many ways, the most interesting thing about Life During Wartime is the idea of the same characters played by different actors. I don't see the point of spending the word count on spoiling the moment when Ciarán Hinds gets the wallet (et all) but ignoring the actual context of the movie. What is gained by keeping it a secret?

An unconventional sequel is still a sequel.

Anyway...

October titles announced on DVD Beaver : Salo (Pasolini), Identification of a Woman (Antonioni), Island of Lost Souls (Kent), Kuroneko (Shindo), The Four Feathers (Korda), Harakiri (Kobayashi) and Dazed and Confused (Linklater).

I think october will be one of the strongest months of this year in terms of C releases
