PS- a symptom of snobbery is elevating lesser (and more obscure) works of an auteur to masterwork level to appear more in-the-know to others.
No way in hell. They are way too profitable for WB to give up. The blu-ray is great extras wise and I don't think they can look or sound any better. It would be very cool if they were, since they are some of my favorite films, but I don't think criterion could ever get the shot to release them

Tom and Jerry over He-man? That's a VERY good sign! Classic animation from the 1940s has it all over limited animated shows based on toys. Your kid has good taste. Introduce him to Looney Tunes, Tex Avery's MGM cartoons, Disney (shorts, as opposed to features), Lantz, and Fleischer cartoons, too.

Thanks Joe! I'm giving it until bedtime to decide...got until 2:59 AM EST to think about it.

I wouldn't even want them too even if they had a shot, it would be pointless. There's no shot though anyway...

I prefer Criterion release more classic and older titles, I care very little about many of the modern movies they release. That is not an absolute statement, but when browsing their catelogue I find myself about 85%/15% leaning towards titles released before about 1970. I understand that Criterion focuses on non-Hollywood/independent films, but I still prefer the older titles to the newer ones.

However if a modern release was "mistreated" by the studio that took care of the blu-ray release, I would LOVE for Criterion to step in and correct all the ills. 12 Monkeys is a major one that comes to mind for me, I'm not sure if that one is possible for Criterion to obtain rights, but IMO a Criterion release is probably the best hope for that movie to get a proper treatment on blu-ray. The only other possibility is likely the fact that the 20th anniversary is coming up in 2015, I doubt Universal will care to bother improving it otherwise...

I love Pale Flower and I do have High and Low being delivered (I hope), but I'm going to say get Chungking Express. A delightful film from Wong Kar-Wai

I was broke and unemployed when this sale started, but I couldn't let this sale go by without getting any criterions, so I got a job a couple weeks ago. Scrounged up enough money to get Solaris and Videodrome.

Just finished seeing Army of Shadows and I must say this is definitely the best Criterion I have seen so far. The film is a masterpiece in every possible sense (Or at least I see it that way ). Lino Ventura was the most fascinating and tragic character in the whole film, helped by no little means by his terrific acting. The cinematography and color hues create an extremely pessimistic atmosphere that conveys the overall mood of the film perfectly. Camera movement was really natural and there is something subtle about it that just blew my mind. The most impressive aspect here is Melville's use of silences. They said more by themselves than the characters speaking lines. This make some vital moments in the film even more powerful. Something more I will like to add is that very few films I have seen have such meaningful opening and closing scenes, those where both scenes are equally good and important to the film are few.

I wish I had more money during this last sale. This one would have probably been the next one I got.

I used Ghoul School because it was on my shelf. I snatched it right up when I found it in the 5 dollar bin on DVD because I wore out the VHS when I was 4. I'll be 26 in 2.5 weeks, and I still love Scooby Doo. Also a huge fan of the "knock-offs" like Josie and the *****cats (the live action film was crap) and The Funky Phantom.

I like almost everything HB has done from the 1950s to present day. I'm also a fan of the classics from the 40s. The 1980s version of Tom and Jerry done by Filmation was pretty bad though, animation was horrible and the music became repetative within 3 minutes. Hanna Barbera's version from the mid-70s wasn't too bad.

Army of Shadows is on my wishlist, I think I may watch it tonight to see if I'm going to grab it during the next sale, or when I'm down in New England area in the fall (it's a month before the sale, November's too risky as far as weather's concerned).

Edit: Argh, why is that censored!? It's just a cartoon show/comic!

That amuses me to no end. Seriously, it does.

Also, Bizarre_eye, how is that even possible that your copy of The Killing/Killer's Kiss shipped!? It doesn't come out for another two weeks!

I watched Yojimbo last night. Great film! Although I had never seen it, I kept thinking there was something very familiar about the plot. About a third of the way through I realized this is the movie both A Fist Full of Dollars and Last Man Standing are based on. I still love Leone's film, but I think I liked Yojimbo a bit more. I can't wait to watch Sanjuro some time this week.

Tried to watch High and Low last night, and it was way too late, and I had to stop it halfway through.

The merits of the film are fairly obvious, but I thought I'd point out that the transfer was very solid. It's obviously inferior to Pale Flower which I also viewed recently, but on it's own, I would never say it looks bad.
