I was hoping for a lively, substantive debate. Oh well.

But I like that trick. "Pretend I'm suddenly above this, and they'll never realize I had nothing to say afterall."

All in good fun

Did Wes Anderson wiss on your breakfast?
Why crap on other people's excitement?

Nope he's got the laserdiscs...

Well to be fair, when a month is announced like the one with People on Sunday, etc, I remember alot of this on Criterion's facebook wall, "I haven't heard of any of these. Lame month. When is The Game going to be released?". That is pretty much the same thing.

As long as I have The Three Colors trilogy, I'll be happy. The only Wes Anderson film I like is The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Fair enough. I haven't been around when that goes on, but I think both stances are pretty ridiculous. As long as Criterion keeps releasing films, I'm happy. at least some of the ones I'm waiting for will appear eventually. I just think it's the most ridiculous attitude to have to undermine people based on the fact that you think their film tastes are not good enough. This is not directed to you specifically, you seem much more reasonable (and knowledgeable) than most people in this discussion. Also, thanks for the recommendations. I don't think I've seen any of those movies, and I'm always one to learn about new movies. There's so much good stuff out there that you never hear about, it's crazy!

I got ya. It's funny, I haven't said one bad thing about this Wes Anderson stuff, only made a joke about it the other day with a video, in good fun (because of past stuff). I think I just sucked myself into this with my comment about IMDB. All this other stuff is fine with me. I have only bought/buying 3-4 Criterions (let's see, People on Sunday, Music Room, Vigo, and Kurahara Eclipse. So 4.) from this year's announcements anyways, so I just pick from the ones I like and move on with my day.

Yeah, I noticed that. I actually both like Anderson and get the criticism, so I found the Michael Scott vid pretty funny when you posted it. BTW, I'm really interested in the Vigo set, but I only buy Criterion films at the B&N sale, or if any movie I want ever reaches those prices on Amazon. I may make an exception, I'm truly excited about it.

You won't be sorry. All in all, L'Atalante (from the Vigo set), for me, is the best movie they have released since......I don't know when.

Has anyone here seen the movie Shock Corridor. If so, would you recommend it?

Very bizarre movie, but I enjoy it very much. Not sure I'd recommend it as a blind-buy, however.

Let's throw all of this Anderson stuff behind us and start the predictions:

Three Colors
The Soft Skin
Bitter Rice
City Lights
Rules of the Game
Rushmore
Wild Strawberries

dream:

Three Colors (Default)
Rushmore (Default)
Rules of the Game (Default)
Chaplin release (I think Default here)
Out 1 (so pretty much, this on down is my dream for a November announcement)
Out of the Blue
Gorin Eclipse

Yes, my dream has 4 (well 3, since I'll get Rules of the Game) releases I wouldn't get.

I would enjoy reading more posts about the Three Colors Trilogy and less cheering versus booing about Wes Anderson.

I'm quite fond of it, actually and would recommend it to anyone, especially those that like their social commentary dressed up as a B-movie. There's also an incredibly informative and entertaining documentary on Fuller and his life and I like it just as much, if not moreso, than the film itself. It gave me that last push to pick up his Eclipse set and I can't wait to acquire more from him.

/fingers crossed for "White Dog" blu upgrade ;P

This post will be out of place with the late Anderson's discussion but I feel the NEED to say it ! I just finished seeing Paris, Texas a few minutes ago and all I can say is (Not really "sayin" it but you get the point!). What an amazing and fascinating film; loved everything about it especially the way Wenders uses the camera to make the narrative "flow". Hard to explain, but the slow-burning narrative combined with the subtle movement from the camera made the film all the more poetic for me. The acting was top notch all along and the dialogue felt natural and honest. Loved the setting and atmosphere too, I liked how I never felt the film "saddening", I mean, it is sad in parts but most of it is about the Travis' discovering his past live in a really good-note kind of way. Have been having a great time with all my blind-buys lately. I am in a winning row right now. Repulsion, Army of Shadows and now Paris, Texas, Solaris is the next one .

Good film in a wacky Sam Fuller early 60's kinda way... I blind bought the DVD years ago. Enjoyed it, but sold it recently to make room for stuff I enjoyed more, Good film though. I won't knock it. You may want to rent it first though. It shows up on TCM from time to time...

I blind bought it during the barnes and noble sale (among many other 1st time buys, it was actually one of the last ones I got this go around).

It was OK, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Definitely not as one of the 1st you get out of the Criterion collection - that is unless you just have some affinity for Sam Fuller or really love b-movies.

It just had that feel of a cheesy b move (which i guess is what it actually was, still some other b-movies and low budget affairs do a better job of "masking" their limited resources with better acting).

It wasn't completely uninteresting and had it's charm as a b move, but it felt alot less substantial than pretty much every other Criterion blu-ray I bought (save for maybe Playtime, which I would rather blow my brains out than watch in it's entirety a 2nd time).

Interesting. I think I should probably rent it from Netflix first in light of some of the comments. Thanks for your great responses guys.

The blu-ray.com story about Rules of the Game says that one supplement will be replaced. Do we know which one? Maybe it's possible to find out which docs for which Criterion still has rights.
