To add something to the recent discussion... I would actually like to both see Soderbergh's version as well as read the book, it is always interesting to both see the original material as well as various "interpretations" of said original material.
I watched Soderbergh's version a few years back and absolutely hated it. I am a huge Tarkovsky fan, so maybe it was some partality on my part, but I just couldn't enjoy it, it felt like everything was extremely dumbed down, plus it has Jeremy Davies someone that may take the title as worst actor in the past 20 years.

It just seems so much sweeter when Criterion releases a film like Last Year at Marienbad--- one that had been out of print for almost ten years. Also, releases like the terrific Close-Up, Leon Morin, etc.

My bottom line: Give me a steady stream of upgrades to classic essentials but also give me some surprises. More recent films are lower priority.
The way I look at Criterion releases, I prefer that they would concentrate more on things that really have not much chance of being release by the major studios. I know we can consider Kurosawa as main stream in here but when you stop and think about it, would another company like WB or Paramount would ever go and try to get the rights for releases of his movies? I doubt it! That is saying a lot considering that kurosawa is considered to be pretty much main stream. Now imagine directors like Ozu, Eisenstein, Godard, Bergman, Fellini (and these are pretty main stream as well compared to others), without Criterion the chances of seeing these movies would be from slim to none. Spiderbaby mention a long list of movies in aother post, whou beside Criterion would even care about these directors and movies. How much chance would I have of finding movies from Poland (I like Polish cinema) if not from them or Kino and the others of that type?

I think the beef some have over Anderson and others is that since they are already well popular and are receiving releases already because of their following from major studios it take's away some chances of getting something else from Criterion. I don't go to mad over since I can't do much to tell Criterion how they should run the business but I understand some of the anger it can create.

The fact that everyone is predicting City Lights is giving me hope

or should I just be worried?

Gummo & Julian Donkey Boy would be interesting, but aren't they New Line? Does New Line license their products out?

By the way, Werner Herzog's (who I love) performance in Julian Donkey Boy was the second worst performance by a director in a film. De Sica in Blood for Dracula was probably the worst, excluding Tarantino in anything of course.

I think Soderbergh's version is very different to Tarkovsky's, so you wouldn't feel like you're just re-watching the same film/story.
Someone on the previous page mentions they believe Soderbergh's version is "dumbed-down", but to me Soderbergh emphasises the emotional choices, rather than the philosophical questions posed by the story, which seems to be Tarkovsky's emphasis.
My problem with Tarkovsky's version is that it puts me to sleep. It's not boring, so this is not a criticism, but it is slow. To finish it, I needed two coffees and a half-time nap
If you don't like Soderbergh's version, the great thing is it's only 90 minutes long

While many of us might prefer that Criterion did this, I think it is important to point out that this is not their goal. I personally think that Criterion should release whatever they want to release. Instead of complaining (and I am not speaking about anyone in particular here), I find it better to watch the movies and think about why Criterion picked the film. In other words, I view these releases as opportunities to think more about film as an art form. Do I think everyone should take the same approach? Absolutely not. Do I think it is silly to tell someone that a film they like is less deserving of a place in the collection than a film I like? Absolutely.

Having said all that, I am listening to the Voices of Light album this morning, hoping that Criterion will announce Passion of Joan of Arc this afternoon. Other titles I would like to see include a Chaplin film (or box set), Y Tu Mama Tambien, and perhaps Ghost World and Ghost Dog.

I would love this. I never upgraded to the Criterion DVD (from my Fox DVD) so I hope they announce this soon.

I wonder what are the chances of a Chaplin set now that Kino as done one for Keaton? It would be very interesting to have one.

That would be great. I never picked up the Keystone or Mutual DVD sets and am waiting with the hope that a blu release will come.

What an amazing and fascinating film; loved everything about it especially the way Wenders uses the camera to make the narrative "flow". Hard to explain, but the slow-burning narrative combined with the subtle movement from the camera made the film all the more poetic for me. The acting was top notch all along and the dialogue felt natural and honest. Loved the setting and atmosphere too, I liked how I never felt the film "saddening", I mean, it is sad in parts but most of it is about the Travis' discovering his past live in a really good-note kind of way. Have been having a great time with all my blind-buys lately. I am in a winning row right now. Repulsion, Army of Shadows and now Paris, Texas, Solaris is the next one .
Just don't ask jcs913 about that film...he hates it! (If you can't tell that I'm kidding...check out his avatar!)

I think it's a great film and one of Wenders best! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!

I agree. Get them all upgraded to blu, so we can move on to some newer finds from Criterion....

Pat, thanks for stating that, as it seems that most people in this thread cannot understand this concept.
