As for your question, I would rather have a Rushmore upgrade. The reasoning? I never purchased the DVD because I was pretty broke when it came out, and I enjoy the movie. I watched the Following on Netflix instant after everyone started talking about it and I wasn't that impressed. It has some interesting Nolan twists, but other than that, it seemed like a very well made student film, and not one that needs to be in the collection. I imagine many will disagree with me, though, and if I watch it again, I might like it more.
sorry, when I said upgrade, I should clarify that I meant you already owned the dvd.

You seem to be right, just looked at some of the others prices.

I have ordered it and pre ordered Island of Lost Souls, so I will have to give these a go.

I had found the Robocop DVD edition at a thrift store and sold it for quite a bit of money, so I am comforted that they definitely hold their value.

Must say that you all are very helpful and this site has marvelous resources.

neo, all are comments are subjective, including yours. We all disagree, but in essence it means nothing, as we have no facts about Criterions bank statement to prove it. Your eloquent post earlier is nice, but you, and myself, have no proof to their 'funding' for any projects. We can all agree to disagree and move on to today's announcements....

BTW, a Chaplin would be very nice...

Ah, I see. That would be harder to answer, but I would still go for Rushmore, but only because I like the movie. I would have a hard time faulting anyone for disagreeing, however.

Well said. As for Chaplin, I am kind of hoping for some sort of set, if only because my birthday is in November and it would make a great gift...so I hope you will all keep that in mind come November

Can't wait for the new covers. Between this site and CF there's going to be enough reading material for the week.

I wholeheartedly agree Pat!

Does anyone know if Criterion owns the BD rights to any of the Keystone, Mutual, and/or Essany Chaplin shorts?

I wish Flicker had released their Chaplin Keystone shorts as a BD, but maybe the source material was questionable?

I've got a PD DVD of the Keystone shorts and the older image release of the Mutual/Essany shorts. THOSE comprise a great set of shorts and condition seems to be pretty good to boot!

I know they definitely have rights to A Day's Pleasure (1919). It was shown with The Gold Rush Janus print.

I have been wondering the same thing. According to this article, which is where I first learned about the Chaplin deal, Janus acquired the rights to the whole film catalog, but what that means is unclear:

I'm just worried that as soon as I buy one of those, a blu version will be announced

I wonder how long these rights last, must be a pain in negotiation?

No...I didn't John...not that I wasn't tempted!

I figured that Criterion would eventually release all of them (at least the "non-shorts") and would likely have a better crop of supplements to boot.

I can't speak for the PQ on the Park Circus BDs and Pro-B only reviewed "The Gold Rush" and "Modern Times", though "The Great Dictator", "Limelight" and "The Kid" have all been released, as well. He gave both Park Circus releases a "4.0" for video, so maybe they are the same transfers as the Criterions?

I would personally like to see "The Kid", myself!

Most people bash Wes Anderson films. I'm the the biggest fan but I was wishing for Life Aquatic first, but Rushmore is fine.

Posted by DWK on CF. Thought this was an interesting observation:

No, but I noticed the past few announcements that some of the two-disc sets that have been upgraded to Blu lose the "SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DISC SET:" description from the Disc Features section. Both Ikiru and À nos amours have no mention of being a two-disc set under their Disc Features, so I figured I'd guess they are being upgraded.

He's speaking of Ikiru
