If you're a Kurosawa fan, you're probably safe to blind-buy it. However, consider that it is a very long film. I'd recommend trying to see it first before buying.
Gotcha. I like long films though. I'm seeking out more Kurosawa tonight. I'm still waiting for High and Low (blind buy) to show up in the mail. Kagemusha's the only CC BD of his I don't own. I'm hoping that The Bad Sleep Well and Throne of Blood get upgrades to BD.

Whoops, I was distracted and typed actor instead of Director.

Then I'll say it: Christopher Nolan is a boring hack of a director, and Inception wasn't that good.

Criterion should just start their own Bluray Club where you pay them every year and get all their titles at a reduced price.
I have this same problem... The Blu ray club would be a good idea. Or maybe B&N could have a full-year Criterion sale (yeah, you wish)

I would'nt say he's a hack but he's definitely becoming one of those annoying, impersonal box office hit directors. And Inception was vastly over-rated.

It's not that he has no visual style and can't direct action. He intentionally chooses to have no visual style and includes poorly-designed action sequences in his movies because he's above all that. He's super-serious and his movies are boring on purpose because he's a genius.

So why do you buy his movies on Blu-ray or are you being sarcastic? Wait. No. Nevermind.

The only film of his I have really enjoyed has been Insomnia. TDK and Inception, while interesting and somewhat enjoyable, are vastly overrated.

I was looking at the CC New Year's Card (via a link in the comments on the announcement), and I'm wondering what we have left for December:

Nolan is much too heavy on plotting and gimmicks. That's why his films get worse on repeat viewings (and his actors don't have much to work with). Nobody cares to hear the rules of Inception on the second viewing. It's insulting to the viewer to explain so much.

Pretty much every line in that movie is exposition.

  • Bitter Rice
  • Y tu mama tambien
  • Wild Strawberries

Would not be surprised to see some of these not released in December. Wild Strawberries looks like it was bumped to 2012.

Exactly. Why was Ellen Page's character even in the movie? I mean I like Page but she got a terrible role to play...

I love Memento, The Dark Night, and like Inception. Let the tomatoes soar!

Ugh, as much as I'm excited by the news of Fanny and Alexander, I had just bought the DVD set a little over two months ago for around $30 and now, of course, the used prices have plummeted due to all the people trying to dump their copies. They're all hovering around the $20 mark. Lesson learned: don't buy anymore Criterion DVDs no matter how improbable an upgrade appears to me.

As far as Nolan goes, Stephanie Zacharek summed him up in her review of Inception: "If the career of Christopher Nolan is any indication, we’ve entered an era in which movies can no longer be great. They can only be awesome, which isn’t nearly the same thing."

Yeah, because Criterion's site for 2010's card had the White Feather listed as "Four Feathers," which isn't going to be released until October. Maybe they're be more generous with the December releases this year.

Slight change of subject, is Kagemusha worth getting? I've been getting into Kurosawa's films lately, and I've really enjoyed the ones I've watched so far, but they all date from the 1950-1963 period. However, I've heard various people say that later, colour Kurosawa wasn't as fun or enjoyable as these earlier B&W films.
I'm not as big on his "Samurai" films (but I own and love Seven Samurai) and have been getting into his "other" films. Druken Angel is a fav, along with High and Low and Redbeard (my personal favorite). I'm a huge Ozu and Naruse fan, so this was new territory for me.

My favorite collection of his "non-Samurai" films is the "PostWar Kurosawa" Eclipse set. I rented ALL of those films and bought the set during the last sale. Setsuko Hara (mostly Ozu films) gives great performances in both "No Regrets For Our Youth" and "The Idiot". The latter film gives us our only glance at both Setsuko Hara and Toshiro Mifune in the same film (please correct me, if I'm wrong).

From what I could find, they also starred in Tokyo No Koibito(1952), but it wasn't directed by Kurosawa.

I imagine the Following release has the same problem as The Game, which is that Nolan and Fincher are too busy making Dark Knight Rises and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to work on the release. I wouldn't be surprised if Y Tu Mama Tambien is delayed for a similar reason: Cauron is busy making Gravity.
