To be truthful, while I do not enjoy Nolan's films for the most part, my whole point in posting my inflammatory comments about him was to point out how stupid it was to whine about Wes Anderson for a ridiculous amount of pages, and I'm not even a Wes Anderson fan. Some people here ended up looking pretty silly. The fact that so many people here think that only "artsy-fartsy, old, foreign" films belong in the collection is just ignorant. I'm sure Criterion has their reasons for releasing films people do not like, but there's no need to get up in arms about it. Obviously the same thing is occuring here with people losing their crap over someone insulting Christopher Nolan.

They're all hovering around the $20 mark. Lesson learned: don't buy anymore Criterion DVDs no matter how improbable an upgrade appears to me.

As far as Nolan goes, Stephanie Zacharek summed him up in her review of Inception: "If the career of Christopher Nolan is any indication, we’ve entered an era in which movies can no longer be great. They can only be awesome, which isn’t nearly the same thing."
Eclipse films are typically safe...ANYTHING else is fair game for an upgrade!

Possibly even the ones Canal gobbled up? They've haven't released anything on blu in a while. Although, I think their distribution deal prevents them from scrapping their "collection".

Thanks for the heads up on that! Looks like I'm checking out this and more Yasuki Chiba films!

This isn't Criterion related but this is really the only board I regularly look in on so I figured I would put this here. I bought the new Big Lebowski Blu today and it came with a digital copy code. If anyone wants it PM me.

On a Criterion-related note I am kicking myelf that I didn't pick up Battle of Algiers yesterday at the B&N sale. I didn't know much about the movie, but now that I saw the preview I want it. Is it worth a blind buy? Guess another to add to a potentially bank-breaking November B&N sale.

Contender for Blu-ray of the year, imo.

I would say it is a safe blind buy

Am I the only person who is relieved when Criterion announces some movies that I am not interested in? It means my disposable income has become more flexible. November will be an inflexible month.

Default authenticity vs quality - is there a balance?

What I find most endearing about the Criterion Collection is their stern commitment to the original material;moreover, that does not necessarily correlates with jeopardizing quality. The films they digitize, restore and re-release strike the fine balance between contemporary moving image quality and the historical authenticity.

Kudos! !!!

It's been in the pipeline for nearly two full years, so Cuaron's current project shouldn't be the reason for bumping.

However, I've heard various people say that later, colour Kurosawa wasn't as fun or enjoyable as these earlier B&W films.
The film is not his best, but I really liked it. The problem is the transfer - one of the worst from Criterion.

Perhaps...I don't know the full story...but The Game has been in the pipeline for a long time, and Fincher's other projects have gotten in the way...

I am just speculating on Y Tu Mama Tambien, of course: we might still get it in December.

It started with the Batman movies. I own "Batman & Robin" and "Batman: The Movie" too so that's not much of an endorsement. Then I actually wound up the rest of them via <$10 sales. Then the "you have every other one so you might as well get the one you don't have" compulsive behavior kicked in. Know thine enemy.

I actually kinda like "Memento" though, gimmicky and shallow as it is. And to bring this back on-topic I won't be able to resist the "Following" Criterion Blu whenever it comes out even though it's a worthless and amateurish piece of trash.

Its certainly a lot better than the Lionsgate/Studio Canal release of Kurosawa's Ran!

I'll disagree with you...... But also point out that you probably owned far less than half of his work when you decided to pick up "Batman and Robin" so justify whatever you want to yourself I guess.

If you think so lowly of it, yet you're still going to buy it, that's your decision I guess, but I find "Following" to be very well done. I owned it long before "Memento" and I realize most people only discovered it after that fact. I like that the concept can work without having life and death ramifications etc.

oh well.... I hope they announce it so you can add some worthless and amateurish trash to your collection.

+1 Some entertaining films but nothing as special as IMDB or some people try to make it .
