Simply put, you have to watch your discs as soon as possible. Factories make mistakes. Years after buying and watching it, my Vertigo DVD went bad for no apparent reason. Plenty of folks here have complained about missing booklets. I bought Pinocchio years ago, and upon watching it , Saving Private Ryan was playing! I checked... it was a Pinocchio labeled disc, but the contents were Saving Private Ryan! What if you buy Seventh Seal and the movie on it is Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo? Years after you bought it, Amazon or B&N won't exchange it...

People my collect Criterions, but for 99% of them the discs themselves are not highly prized collectibles.

enzolt, you need someone to open the BDs for you. You're missing out the fun of reading the booklets, watching the supplimentals, and seeing a high quality transfer of those fantastic films. Also, how do you know if you have a disc or booklet missing? Several people have said they were missing the odd booklet, and a couple said Beatuy and the Beast had no disc. Rip those babies open stat!

OK. On boxed collections, I'll just slit the shrink wrap and leave it on, so I can take/put the movies out/in, but the box stays minty fresh with no greasy fingerprints.

Works just fine for box sets, LPs, and... Criterion laserdiscs...snif!

Me thinks you mean to quote enzolt, not me. On that subject though, I have opened all my BDs, even though I still have to watch a few of them. I did start Lola Montes, but I had to stop it halfway through because no one else wanted to watch a French film.

I used to have an old VHS copy recorded off TV so many years ago. I know it was released on DVD, but I think it was a pretty ordinary full-frame version. I don't know it was full-frame because it was open matte or pan and scan.
Either way, I never bothered to get it.
Don Siegel is definitely under-represented on blu-ray.
The DVD is awful (it looks like it was made with one of those Go-Video dual vhs-dvd decks) and the NetFlix stream is only marginally better.

I did catch the last half hour or so on MGM-HD several months ago and it looked pretty good so there is hope.

Jeeze, they must be making up for the October title delays.

They just don't want to miss out on any of that lucrative 'preorder it, buy it somewhere else, forget to cancel the preorder' market.

There's gold in them thar hills.

Use the links via blu-ray.com.

Makes it easier to find them without searching Amazon

Would not the movies of WIlder fall into the same category as well? I see these directors as more accessible, like Hitchcock as well that can be handle properly by the regular releases and not be in the Criterion collection, maybe I am wrong?
You would think. But as time marches on, Wilder seems to share a similar fate as Lubitsch. He may be one of the most popular of his day and his influence is obvious, but he is still being forgotten. Outside of Some Like it Hot topping the great comedy lists and The Apartment still having that oscar, he doesn't seem to get a lot of play.

I honestly don't care what gets a CC release as long as good movies get released well. But Wilder was as good as what he did as Bergman or Godard were at doing what they did, and he could do with some attention from somewhere.

I completely agree. Wilder is one of my favorite directors and he deserves more attention on blu-ray. MGM has, on DVD, a nice big-box set of many of Wilder's most memorable films, including Some Like It Hot and The Apartment. MGM, with their partnership with Fox, should be working to release that box set on blu, after having properly remastered and restored, as necessary, those films for hi-def.

Some of Wilder's more obscure pictures (Five Graves to Cairo, Fedora, etc) deserve some attention, too. Heck, I haven't even seen them because they're so hard to find.

Are we just basing that off of the 60's period?

Wilder often gets dismissed because he didn't move the camera around much-- "invisible camera" and he didn't really experiment. Although for what he (and Brackett/Diamond) did it's hard to argue with his methods. He made damn good films.

uh, what?

I think a better description would be that to the modern consumer of DVDs & BR's (mainly white males), Capra's films are hokey and cheaply sentimental, kind of like a pre-"dark" period Spielberg without the special effects. Even though he made propaganda films for the USA, he was also a target of the HUAC investigation for palin' around with Reds. I seriously doubt his politics have anything to do with his films availability in the home video market.
