Finished The Killers Kiss last night. Excellent release. Two movies one price!

I can't help wonderign what other great titles Criterion will be able to pry from MGM. I'm hoping for some more classics. Maybe The Asphalt Jungle. Hmmmm. I wonder who has the rights now to Blood For Dracula. I'd love to see a Bluray of it.

The Asphalt Jungle is the best heist film I've seen. (would make an excellent addition to the CC IMO)

I checked out The Killing Blu-ray last night, the A/V looked very nice. Killer's Kiss is a great extra, I just don't see it holding up on repeat viewings like some of the other Noir that Criterion has released of late.

Does anyone think that El Espinazo del Diablo has a chance of getting a spine number?

Default Life During Wartime

A BD Netflix copy of Life During Wartime arrived in my mailbox yesterday and I watched it last night. I couldn't get into it. I had no interest in the characters or the story. In the film's defense, I have never seen Happiness. Is there anyone who absolutely adores this film? I have scratched it off my "Criterion BD's I want to purchase and watch again" list.

I don't know I think the New York imagery alone warrants repeat viewings. The locations seem to build their own atmosphere in the film for me.. While I found a lot of things that were clunky in the film it had a lot of strong points IMO. Especially for such a small budget. Still have yet to see Fear and Desire.

It will be interesting to see how Dark Shadows plays out.
That is exactly what happened, funnily enough. But I have to disagree about Mars Attacks. I find that one quite funny. I've always thought that it accomplishes just what Burton was going for. Again, I may bot like it just as much as I used to, but it is one of the few Burton films I will stay and watch if I run I to it flipping through TV stations.

"Ed Wood" (the last Burton-directed movie to hit Blu-ray) is Disney-controlled via Touchstone and the recent "Rushmore" announcement would suggest they're now opening to licensing to Criterion but it doesn't really need a Criterion release. The DVD was reasonably-packed with commentary, deleted scenes etc. and if Disney just released those extras along with the film itself in HD (which is what WHV is doing with "Pee-wee's Big Adventure") we'd be set. The theatrical release "Dark Shadows" will be a good chance for them to release it to cash in.

I always wonder why people just want Criterion to arbitrarily release movies that are already well-represented otherwise. They're not the only game in town even if they did essentially create the Special Edition formula.

I actually enjoyed KK more than The Killing because of the cinematography in the latter and the narration in the former (a turnoff for me). I still love The Killing, though; I'm just saying I was very impressed by KK.

Agreed. As long as Ed Wood gets a good release, I'll be pleased.

I've never cared for narration in a movie. Which brings up a question. The producer Harris on the disc comments that at the preview of The Killing audiences were confused. He also states this was a concern of the studio as well. Because of this Harris and Kubrick set upon re-editing the film to make it more linear before eventually abandoning that idea. Harris never mentions in the interview whether the narration was thrust upon them by the studio or not. Also no remark on whether the narration was a part of the original cut or added at the time they decided against re-editing it. He does mention Kubrick disliked narration so I was curious if there is any hard evidence about what really happened. I wish there was a way to view the movie without the narration.

Yet Kubrick decided to add a narrator to Barry Lyndon to tell the viewer what happens before it actually happens. Bleh.

Yeah, I also wish that I could view The Killing without the narration spelling everything out.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Gilliam, I switched latter/former in that post. Oops. Obviously I meant that I was impressed by the cinematography in Killer's Kiss and a bit frustrated with the narration in The Killing.

I've got Vigo on per-orden fron Amazon, since apparently Planet Axel doesn't ship to Mexico, so it's obviously not here just yet, but I can't wait. Really jealous of the ones that have received it already. Hope you can share sone thoughts on the collection once you've gone through it.

Algiers just got dropped off. Looking forward to popping this baby in in a few since work's a bit light this morning...

I'd like to hear people's thoughts on Vigo.

I have now had two copies of "Videodrome" delivered that have both been broken by being crushed, bloody USPS. Amazon is overnighting me another copy today.

Watched Charade last night and found it great, such a fun movie. I am so glad that I have found this collection and you members that discuss them in such detail.

It is much appreciated to a classic movie newb like myself.
