Timothy Carey also has roles in Paths of Glory and Head (also from Criterion on blu)

He was also in a few John Cassavettes films among others.

Rumor has it that Quentin Tarantino wanted to use him Reservoir Dogs.

I would love for Criterion to get the rights to this Tim Carey directed rarity!
a very young Frank Zappa did the music score!

Well, I have finished watching Complete Jean Vigo (minus the special feratures) I found it to be an excellent release from criterion once again.

I enjoyed all 4 of his films, but mostly, L'Atalante and Zero De Conduite, the latter reminded me of Au revoir les enfants, maybe Malle had seen it and took from it? I watched all of the films with the commentary as well, very insightful and having never seen them before, it was a great way to get a better understanding of Vigo and his short lived career.

The transfers are as good as you are going to get them. Some scene have some serious damage but given the age I wasn't too distracted by them. I did notice some EE on L'Atalante at the start, but seemed to be non-exsistent after that. Most scenes are very well detailed, skin tones are natural, blacks are inking and there is a lot of distinguished detailed to be seen.

Overall, Jean Vigo is highly recommended, and a great addition to my criterion collection

I'm sure this has been asked several times through the 1800 pages of this thread, but why the hell do Criterion region lock their releases?

Its so bloody annoying for anyone outside the region A zone

Because they are required to as part of deals they make to get the rights to movies.

I found a great site that had the Criterion exclusive commentaries for the first 3 Bond films. Now you don't have to spend a fortune to be a completest! http://www.the007dossier.com/007doss...mentaries.aspx

The difference being that the BFI and MoC only lock when they have to and Criterion locks without exception

Default Last Emperor

Can anyone help me determine if my new copy of The Last Emperor Criterion Blu-ray is legit?

I havent opened it yet. It didnt come in a regular thick clear Criterion case, but i know that's fairly normal. It didn't however come in a cardboard digipack like my bottle rocket criterion did. It looks like it's a cardboard slipcase (shiny and refractive) over a black dvd case. It's shrinkwrapped over the slipcase. There is no Criterion number on the side of sleeve, it says "3G-BD0485" with some Asian writing a fancy 3 above it.

Does anyone else have a copy like this?

Doesn't sound like a Criterion release to me. Like you said it should either be the clear case or the digipack like Bottle Rocket.

I'm guessing you will get an answer long before then knowing this crowd. But if not, I'll check my copy when I get home tonight and let you know.

No love for Cul-de-Sac here?

The Criterion BD looks gorgeous. If you enjoy one of a kind films, this is a must see. An absurdist, pitch black comedy with great characters, score, and setting. (Directed by Polanski at his most untethered)

I completely forgot to comment on it here after watching it. I loved it. Loved the presentation from it.

I'm surprised the seller actually has 100% feedback. You should definitely report him/her or give negative feedback. I'm interested to see what this copy you got looks like.

I'm not surprised that they region lock A - I am surprised that many Criterions are English-only subtitles. I'm not complaining - I can only read English But I'm surprised Criterion gets away with it.

the best film I've seen this year.

question: do you think she
[Show spoiler]kidnapped his daughter
because (1)
[Show spoiler]she was getting revenge for him leaving her/lying to her
or (2)
[Show spoiler] she honestly thought the daughter was in danger, after seeing the home video of him having his daughter sing, like he had Mia dance, and so was "rescuing" her?

What is a bit interesting in regards to how Criterion does subtitling, is that they are do differently based on whether the movie is English Only, "Other Language" Only or Mixed...

On both Cronos and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, there was only English subtitles when they didn't speak English, but on titles like In the Realm of the Senses, Gomorrah, Naked and others (that I have seen) everything is subtitled.

It feels a bit strange that they do it this way, does anybody know why? (this might have been answered before I discovered this thread, but I don't really feel like browsing through all the pages to find it )
