Check junkmail. Mom's not a B&N member or anything either, and she just got the e-mail because she registered her Nook about a month ago. She's never ordered anything from them online. So it is weird you didn't get the coupon.

This might interest some Ohio members:
Cleveland Cinematheque is showing WORLD ON A WIRE in September or October (Schedule hasn't been issued yet but it is mentioned in their literature). Also, La Dolce Vita is coming back again ![]() Last edited by ShellOilJunior; 08-25-2011 at 06:16 PM. |

It would be kinda cool if they would release Godzilla and The Blob in the same month. |

![]() What are the odds of a Criterion release of Napolean? Plus how would they go about doing the 3 screens when the screen opens up? http://silentfilm.org/event-special.php# Also anyone here lucky enough to be going? |

Ok, it took me two nights (due to my sleepy eyes), but I finally finished Seijun Suzuki's Gate of Flesh on Hulu...
Wow, that was some strong stuff. Not familiar with Suzuki, and I had read how over the top he could be... wow. Don't know if the over the topness made the film better or worse, but it sure is... uhhh... lurid and wow. I was expecting a nice strong Japanese Hollywood style drama... and if I had just walked in in the middle I would have thought it that due to the color, set design, and general appearance of the film that I had stumbled onto some 1950's MGM or Warner film run amok! I suppose a bit of background knowledge on post war Japan, Japanese film industry and other stuff will help in the enjoyment and understanding of the film. Sure would have helped me out some. Do I recommend it? If you're used to and like tough movies, sure. The story in general seems to take back seat to the lurid stuff, so if you want to see this with your wife, or sis, or mom, or kids or someone who generally likes middle of the road fare... well, maybe not. Pretty nice streaming quality on Hulu btw... |

Some similar themes to The Matrix but definitely more of a low-tech, old school thinking man's sci-fi feel with a decidedly German twist. Last act turned it into a man on the run thriller because our protagonist "knew too much". Always fun to be simultaneously wondering who the hell you are and why the hell "they" are trying to kill you - don't you think? Oh and don't get on the bad side of "big brother". He's always watching... My first Fassbinder film but I don't think it will be my last. Last edited by Movie Nut; 08-25-2011 at 08:04 PM. |

I saw Napoleon at Radio City years ago... they simply showed the film in 1.33. and opened up the curtains for the wider screen when needed (it was so cool!) Suppose they could do that in any theatre...
Or are you referring to a home video release? The old VHS and laserdisc just letterboxed the widescreen parts. I suppose they do something like what was done on Dark Knight... Quote:

I just went to Borders to see what Criterions they had left. Surprisingly they had about 10, but half of which I had. I had to limit myself to just 3 out of these:
Yi Yi Red Desert Gimme Shelter Howard's End The Naked Kiss I went with Yi Yi, Red Dessert, and The Naked Kiss. Hopefully I made the right choice. I then checked out a second Borders on my way home and they had Amarcord and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Time to beg my wife to let me spend more money. Which of my new movies should I watch first? |

I just checked out the Sterling Hayden interviews on The Killing BD. Wow, what a far out, cool old man he became. He was completely open and sincere with the interviewer, talking about some topics that did not paint him in the most positive light.
This supplement is worth taking 20 min. to indulge in. ![]() I have not seen Yi Yi BamJoe, but the other two you picked up are both very good films IMO. I'd start with Red Desert. Last edited by Monty70; 08-25-2011 at 10:34 PM. |
