question:
will the prices for Pierrot La Fou skyrocket like the Third Man before the next b&n sale? does anyone think b&n will run out of stock before then ?
I forgot to add it to my orders in the last one

[Show spoiler]I kept wondering how the main character would react as events played out.

I thought it was predictable too, turns out I was wrong.
[Show spoiler]I thought he was going to get the officers wife pregnant, possibly even by rape, then end up killing the officer to finish his revenge. All the scenes of him and the wood cutting/sawing, I was expecting an officer in a hundred pieces
. So yeah, I thought it was predictable...great movie!

I have a feeling no. At least not to the absurd price levels being reached for Third Man. How long has Pierrot Le Fou been OOP, yet it's still in stock. There doesn't seem to be much demand for it. I mean it could sell out before November, but I don't think it would suddenly spike over it's current price like Third Man did.

Then again I wouldn't have thought "Man who Fell to Earth" would fetch such a large premium either, yet it does. So I wonder if it's just temporary demand due to the "OMG, it's not in stores anymore" factor.

Either way, $31 seems like alot at it's current price.

I think Pierrot Le Fou got a lot more supply because they announced it was going OOP like a month before they actually lost the rights to it, and they said all the orders that were placed on their site before the end of the month would be fulfilled. It quickly became backordered on the site, so Criterion probably had to do another printing of them. This chain of events quickly cut demand and increased the supply, thus the prices never rocketed for the title after it actually went OOP, and all those third party sellers aren't buying up everyone one of them they can find because there isn't a healthy profit.

The other two weren't announced OOP the same way, buyers were just left with the stock on hand. That's what I think anyway.

Are any of the documentary shorts on The Double Life of Veronique worth watching? I've enjoyed all the other extras so far on the disc, but I've never been a huge fan of documentaries.

I ordered it during the sale and they still haven't shipped it, for what that's worth.

It's also not the classic The Third Man is. It's.. well... Godard, who's films don't hold up well outside the pretty strict confines of the time period and politics he was always preaching. Regardless, Third Man is always on 100 Best lists, and was (I think) voted one of the best British films ever made.

If not the best. I thought that the British Film Institute selected it as the best British film ever made?

Anyways, I do want it. Very badly. Can't find a good price on it anywhere. Sigh. This is what happens when you arrive to the Blu game too late.

I couldn't believe it. I had Fanny and Alexander blu and Three Colors Trilogy on blu both in my gold box at the same time. The Fanny and Alexander dropped to 39.89 and the Three Colors Trilogy dropped to 53.19 =) These are the only 2 criterion pre orders I really want other then Carlos

In most ways the going rate for The Third Man makes sense. It's a fantastic film and a great release. The only thing that doesn't completely track for me is the exent to which people are apparently ignoring what is by all accounts a perfectly acceptable Studio Canal release.

A reasonable price premium for the CC release would make sense but over fifty? I love free markets but they do make my head itch sometimes.

Those are the three releases I would be least inclined to pick up before the Nov sale. Even if B&N tries to tighten up coupon usage (and I pray to [this space for let] that they don't) those three should almost certainly qualify for the $8/$40 coupon and even if they don't the 50% alone would still be cheaper than the gold box.

I finally had a chance to finish White Material and not knowing what the hell is going on in a film usually annoys the living hell out of me but sometimes I really freaking love that and this was one of those times.

The Claire Denis piece (30min or so) in the Interviews supplement is pretty interesting too.

Liked it very much.

I think the Studio Canal Blu Ray does not include the feature length documentary "Shadowing The Third Man" and the commentary by Steven Soderbergh.
Will Criterion never release this again or is there a chance that the rights can be obtained by them again?

I watched "Shadowing The Third Man" and thought it was one of the most tedious and mediocre "making of" documentaries I've ever seen.
It had about 30 minutes of interesting content, but it was bulked up with so much fluff. Most annoyingly, it just replayed entire scenes from the film, but projected onto famous locales used by the film, as if that was somehow artistic.
Much of the content merely amounted to trivia about the film, rather than insight.
I am looking forward to watching it with the two commentaries sometime, and Peter Bogdanovich's introduction was pretty cool.

Criterion releases appeal to collectors. In the most extreme case, if a collector with a decent amount of disposable income has every Criterion release but one, how much do you think they might be willing to pay for that?
