Do tell, where at?

Borders going out of business sale. 70% off all blu-rays right now. They still have a couple of others, but I shouldn't be buying anything right now. Just picked up the one that is OOP.

Edit: My girlfriend works at Borders and just told me the other Criterions were sold already anyway. I guess this one was still there because no one in Carson City, NV wanted an artsy-fartsy French movie.

To be fair I'd have been surprised if I was the first to recommend this, also 2 months would have been a rather impressive production span

It was but the third title is Seven Days in May.

(not that that would be a bad idea, actually)

Really? I thought Walkabout was his most popular film. It's certainly the one I think of when I think of his career. I don't see it as overlooked here or anywhere, personally. Or maybe it's just me thinking it's his most well known since I think it's his best.

Unfortunately, his career in directing films is pretty much as a whole below average.

Walkabout, however, is an excellent movie that looks gorgeous on blu.

Curious why you would say that. As compared to whom?

I'm not comparing him to anyone other than himself alone. And let's be blunt: his later work just doesn't compare to his 70s output.

I agree, that his early films are his best, which can be said for many directors. To view him as a below average director just seems like a vague comment. But to each his own I guess.

I said his output/career as a whole is below average. I didn't say he was a below average director. Based on his 70s output he is spectacular and shows that he's capable of better than what he's put out in the past thirty years.

Exactly my thoughts, Bad Timing was the last of his decent output - Eureka which looked promising on paper - Hackman, Pesci et al with themes similar to There Will Be Blood - it was just... well boring really to put it bluntly.

Sounds like you may have meant to type something else, as I read in your post "his career in directing films is pretty much as a whole below average." Just a comment, as its all subjective anyway.

Watched Sweetie first time last night. Pretty good film. Everything before the introduction of Sweetie felt like something from a Lynch movie I thought.

I hope that my further explanation cleared things up. Clearly, though, the bad outweighs the good when you look at his directing credits.

I would agree. A better question would be, why?? Money, inspiration, etc...

Anyways, Question for all: Who else, that Criterion has in their catalog, would you say that of also?

The first name to pop in my head was Sam Fuller and that's kind of odd for two reasons.

One, I've only seen The Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor and while I didn't love them I certainly didn't dislike them.

Two, however ambivelant I might have been to the films I like Sam Fuller himself. A lot, actually. He seemed like the kind of guy you'd love to have a cigar with.

Anyone else seen Orpheus? I just picked it up, and I'd like to hear some thoughts on it. I'll probably watch it tonight... or I'll watch the Jean Vigo set.
