Carlos Blu-ray REVIEW

Quote:
For the record, Criterion have provided optional English subtitles for the main feature. Unfortunately, they only appear when English isn't spoken, which is somewhat disappointing as many of the important characters in the film are not native English-speakers and have rather thick accents.
I'm surprised this is something Criterion isn't more on top of - it seems right up their 'go the extra mile' alley. The SDH subs on Kes were an adequate (though not ideal) workaround, maybe that will also be the case here.

That aside, I'm very much looking forward to this one. I streamed it a few months back and absolutely loved it.

The supplemental features are actually as fascinating as Carlos. I stayed until the early morning hours yesterday to watch Maison de France and the interview with Angie. The two exclusive interviews with Olivier Assayas and Edgar Ramirez are also terrific.

I'm a bit confused about how the Criterion version is arranged on it's two discs compared to the UK edition (which I have).
The UK edition has the three parts of the complete five-and-a-half hour version spread across two discs. Then the Theatrical Version of Carlos (166 minutes) is on the third disc. I can't remember which disc has the supplemental features.
Does the Criterion edition have the complete five-and-a-half hour version on one disc? And then all the supplemental features (which look great) on the second disc? Because that would be crazy to put that much film onto one disc.
Also, the review for the UK edition says 330 mins, but the Criterion is 339 mins. Typo?
Note to those of you wondering if you will be missing anything by not getting the shorter theatrical version as a supplement - it's not worth watching. It's literally half the running time and barely makes sense unless you've seen the full version.
Note to those of you wondering if you should blind-buy it: YES!

If you look at the review, you would see that:

Disc 1 has the trailer, Shooting of the OPEC Sequence, and Selected-scene Commentary. Disc 2 has the rest of the extras.

Also, Disc 1 has episodes 1&2 and Disc 2 has episode 3.

Run time:

Episode 1: 01.44.31s
Episode 2: 01.52.21s
Episode 3: 02.04.07s
340.59

I am going to check the UK release now.

Edit.
UK release:

Episode 1: 01.44.01
Episode 2: 01.51.54
Episode 3: 02.03.27
338.82

The difference comes from the company logos, not cuts. So, we'll just round them all at 339.

The UK release had the same problem with subtitles.

I have never seen an edition of LYaM in anything other than the original digi-pack for sale in a store. (not sure what Amazon has in stock)

For what it's worth, the original slipcase package for LYaM was IMO the nicest of all the Criterion releases that came that way. (the disc holder stayed in the slip much better) I still purchased the the plastic case anyway.

Incredible film by the way.

I should soon be in possession of a 2nd copy of Man who fell to Earth Criterion BD.

I would like to auction it on eBay, but would prefer people from various forums I'm on to be the first involved in case any are interested in it.

I'm waiting to receive it just to be sure of the condition (because it will of course be impacted on the price), and also to find out the cheapest way to send it to the USA, but still, if anyone interested, I should have it end of next week.

Depending on the condition and the shipping fees, I think it could be around $70.

If anyone interested, just PM me.

I usually try to not post about pricing, but it was nice to be patient and save a few bucks for a change.

I had ordered the Jean Vigo BD set from Amazon and paid about $30 for it. I found out about the current B & N 40% off sale on the day it was being shipped, so I couldn't cancel it. I planned on shipping it back for a refund. For those that aren't aware...there is also a pair of 20 % off coups that you can print from that website that likes to have DVD TALKs.

I was able to do a return/repurchase of the Vigo set and save another $4.50. Couldn't resist buying "If...." and "Orpheus" while I was there as well.

Planned on waiting until Nov., but $18.xx for a $40 title is a pretty good deal. Will save most of the Oct. And Nov. titles for that sale...well...might get "The Phantom Carriage" on the release date.

For those interested...the 40% off sale is for another week or so...BUT...the 20% coup/code is only good until tomorrow night.

I waited till this AM to order Vigo, and, of course, out of stock, so un-orderable. So picked up Secret Sunshine instead. I'll be in the neighborhood of & B&M B&N tomorrow, so I'll try to pick up the Vigo Collection then.

Yup.
I've now had two packages shipped successfully and in good condition.
However, I'm still waiting on a package of 6 blu-rays. It's possible they're on a world tour and haven't sent me a postcard to tell me where they are.
B&N have said I need to wait until the 7th (this week) and then they'll start investigating.
Unfortunately, the package was sent via regular international mail, so they say it can't be tracked online.
So far, I've been patient, but I will be hoping for some proper customer service when I next contact them.

Their packages takes 1 month and a half to reach me, so be patient that it will turn up.

So after reading the review on this site, I think that Carlos may be the best Criterion blu-ray yet. It looks absolutely amazing.

I'm being patient, but the two packages that have arrived were sent 1 week and 2 weeks after the blu-ray package, so it definitely should be here by now.

is B&N really not big enough of a chain for you guys to just drive there and pick up your films? I live in a suburb of Atlanta with 3 B&N stores within 15 minutes of me.

Are you talking to the users from England, Australia, and Portugal?

Because it would be pretty hard for them to drive to a Barnes & Noble.
