Because it would be pretty hard for them to drive to a Barnes & Noble.
I was just about to say this, the closest B&N to me is a nice plane journey or two away

It took a month for 2 times 1 BD to arrive in France.
I find this quite long.

That is too long, was that order with B&N?

Yes, of course, why dont they just board a plane and go to a B&N?

Well I guess I am going to have to get Harakiri, but I might wait until one of those 50% off sales. Hopefully I can get a decent amount for my DVD.

B&N generally has one in November. That's when I'm planning to stock up on all the good Criterion titles released between now and then.

I'm still waiting for four out of five packages I was sent from B&N during the sale. The first one arrived a month ago and was shipped on July 15th. The first one that got sent of the ones that haven't arrived was sent on July 19th. I don't know what to do. The tracking numbers don't seem to be working at all, or I don't know how to use them or something. Pretty annoying.

Still, if I ever do get the movies I ordered, I shall order again during the November sale. Can't beat those prices, especially with Fanny & Alexander and the Three Colors set coming up.

I live in Mexico, BTW.

I live in Germany and I'm still waiting for a package from B&N. I received the Email about shipping 2nd August 2011. "We shipped your package by Brokers World Wide/ISAL." Does someone know what it is? Never heard about that shipping company.

How long does the shipping method you chose, take? And maybe it's in customs?

There should be no need for that at all.
It's hard to tell looking at the screenshots for the two editions, because they haven't provided a side-by-side comparison as they do at blubeaver, but a click glance suggests the Criterion is missing image around all edges.
The Criterion seems to have a little more on the top and bottom, but a good deal less on the sides. The MOC is also in a rather strange AR (2.42:1, per this site's review), whereas the Criterion is 2.35:1, achieved partially by the cropping on the left and right. This isn't the same as windowboxing for overscan, which is done by zooming out on the whole picture. My theory is that Criterion had a 1080p master that included the additional picture information seen on the MOC, decided that this information shouldn't be seen (2.42:1 is certainly non-standard), and simply cropped out the sides (instead of zooming in, which would've degraded the image quality). If you ask me they should've just left it as is -- the extra info on the sides hardly wrecks the compositions.

I'm now waiting on a side-by-side comparison, because I'm most interested in contrast and grain, and whether there has been much digital tampering to either edition.
This might sound superficial, but I'd like to see MoC and others put as much effort into their cover designs as Criterion do.
In this example, the Criterion cover for Harakiri is great, but the MoC is boring.

I chose the cheapest shipping method "Int'l. Airmail". According to the help page it's supposed to take 9-24 business days.
It's possibly in customs, but they'll gonna send me a notice about it.

Harakiri will be the first film that I buy an edition from Eureka when the same film is offered from Criterion. After taking a close look at the screen caps I believe the Eureka BD to be superior. My BD player/HDTV setup does not have any overscan, so the Criterion would be displayed in a window-boxed fashion on my TV. (not cool)

As for the Eureka aspect ratio, it is common for films that were shot in scope to be presented in a AR that is slightly different. For example, Secret Sunshine was shot in 2.39 to 1 and presented by Criterion in 2.33 to 1. (Solaris was shot in 2.35 and presented in 2.37)

is it me or does the UK Blu-ray of Carlos have differing ARs? I could have sworn one of the episodes was 1.77:1.

I'm sure it has already been told somewhere, but I can't find it anymore : I ordered a couple of Criterion BD and 2 of them arrived quite crushed on the opening side, and I would like to know where I can have replacement cases shipped to France.

You can try to contact criterion directly. also, I believe Criterion uses the sames casas as the PS3 games.

That's what I did, but I'm afraid they might not ship cases to France either.
And I'm not so keen on using bluraysforeveryone to pay something like $10 per case.

Unfortunately, PS3 games have a PS3 top part, meaning that the plastic sleeve-cover is smaller than Criterion covers.

Rather lazy on Criterion's part to be putting one of their windowboxed masters, especially one of the ones that threw away content, onto a blu-ray without bothering to re-do it. Quite disappointing.

I take the opposite view - I'll take old school cover art any day over modern efforts, including this one. I think the Criterion cover looks cheap and tacky, as if it were scribbled on the back of an envelope in 5 minutes. The MoC cover may be a still, but it sets the time and the mood and has a certain gravitas and goes to prove the point that they don't make them like they used to. The best old school cover for me though is Will Success spoil Rock Hunter?
