I think the only ones that were re-released were the very early movies (chunking express, the last metro, etc...) because everyone was complaining about the crappy quality of the packaging. They continued to make digipacks after but they've been much more sturdy.

All that being said, I'd still like Sàlo to come in a digipack I guess I'll be holding onto my DVD for that prurpose alone

I believe the first 9 criterion blus came out in those really thin ones and those were the ones replaced. Some still have a digipak type case but I think most of them come in a slip box and if I'm not mistaken most of them are 2 disc.

Only multi-disc releases from Criterion are in digipack packaging now.

Amacord has one, but the booklet is huge.

I'm guessing, but the reason "Breathless" is not in a clear case is because the booklet that comes with it is super-thick and wouldnt fit in a clear case.

Anyone interested in ordering earlier, the December titles are up for pre-order on Amazon at the usual $27.99 price.

I haven't seen Revanche, but Blow Out is well worth the effort and the blu-ray package they put together, particularly Noah Baumbach's interview with Brian De Palma, is pretty good.
I've been watching a lot of Criterion blu-rays (and DVDs) recently, so I plan to do a summary soon...

I really wish the price would come down too.... $35 is pricey I'll probably end up getting it anyway though

edit: so according to DVD beaver, it's not even in a digipack.... It's in a clear case. Not sure how I feel about that
Many of the original CC releases on dvd were in a 2 disc or some (like Algiers) are in a 3 disc digipack, as the film was 1 disc and the extras are on the other disc. This way CC could maximize bitrate on the feature since it was on a dvd. As you know, on blu-ray, they can easily fit the feature and the extras on 1 disc due to the 50gb disc size, as opposed to the 7gb dvd size. The only time Criterion does a digipack for a blu-ray release is if it has 2 discs, since Scanavo does not make the 2 disc cases yet or if it has a larger than normal booklet.

Diabolique. By the way, I work in law enforcement, and I can say that the acting in Revanche may be the most realistic of any movie I have ever watched.

Does anyone know who has the rights to Satantango by Bela Tarr? It would be great for Criterion to adquire the rights . Imagine it being Spine #600 .

Off-topic, but Darkcritic, I'm in love with your avatar. Too bad none of the related films are on the Criterion Collection, come to think of it...

This is incorrect - Criterion released the original 9 blurays in slim digipaks with slipcovers that slid vertically over the book part. They then made replacement cases available for those who wanted them, and have replaced the digipak versions with plastic case versions for subsequent pressings.

However, sinece that time, a number of digipak releases have come out, with either 1 or 2 discs. Amarcord and The Sweet Smell of Success are single disc blurays in digibooks with book-style slipcases. I think Breathless was also a single-disc slipcased bluray. Night of the Hunter was a 2-disc bluray in slipcase.

He mentioned that in his post. Don't know about Sweet Smell of Success or Breathless but Amarcords booklet is fairly large and probably wouldn't fit well in a clear case.

On another note. Should I watch Amarcord or Orpheus?

If you want nostalgia with some bawdy Italian humor watch Amarcord. If you want a dream-like experience watch Orpheus

I think I'm gonna go with Orpheus after the football game. But who knows maybe I'll just watch both

Sorry to seem pedantic, but jcs913 said "the only time Criterion does a digipack for a blu-ray release is if it has 2 discs". That's the bit for which I was offerring up the correction - all in the spirit of goodwill and information-sharing, of course...

He/she is right about 2-disc blurays being in digipaks though.

I'm not sure what Criterion's criteria for deciding which single-disc releases get digipaks as opposed to plastic cases, but no doubt size of booklet comes into it (if not being the primary factor).

Thanks a lot ! Yeah, let hope that "Bullfighter/Matador" hint a few weeks ago means it is something that will finally happen .

In another note, just finished watching Salaam Bombay! and I was left completely amazed. An incredibly powerful drama with amazing characterization. So authentic and thought-provoking. In many ways, this films reminded me of Los Olvidados by Bunuel, situated in India instead of Mexico. Common themes are touched upon both and many others similarities can be found. Such an amazing "hidden" gem . I wonder if Criterion will release it sometime in the future. They already have Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding in the collection (And in BD) and this would be an incredible fit along that one.
