I'll have a look. It was the first return from my Google search of his name.

I will likely get "Island of Lost Souls" during the Nov. B&N sale...but I've got "The Phantom Carriage" on preorder from Amazon. The screen captures from the "Beaver" look great and I'm a big fan of the silents.

Yes and yes. The B&N Nov sale can't come quickly enough!

I'll post it for you, as it is just information. You are clearly not selling anything. Keep up the good work and good news about Wings.

It's just a screenshot of the movie. It's guess it's a trade off, you won't buy Weekend, I won't buy the Colors Trilogy. Turning the page....

Been thinking about introducing myself to the Eclipse Series so I want to know if any of you have some recommendations . My mind is almost set towards the Dusan Makavejev - Free Radical and/or Aki Kaurismaki's Ploretariat Trilogy . I wanted the Makavejev set because of my tendency to always try films from different/obscure cinema. I don't have a single Yugoslavian film in my collection so I think it would be a nice addition . Can anyone comment in the quality of this set? Or maybe suggestions about other Eclipse Series set? I want to keep in the lower budget so any set with 5-6 films will be avoided until next sale .

Yep, seen them both. They are both great, and have already been ordered.

I have the limited edition Tartan DVD of TPC with the KTL soundtrack. (#1990 of 2000)

Sorry Matt, I thought that was you. I will delete the link and edit my post, you can edit your quote. Either way, thanks for the info.

Oshima
Chantal Akerman
Lubitsch Musicals
Nikkatsu Noir

I'm going to buy The Phantom Carriage. I also picked up The Tales of Hoffman at BB today.

Agree 100%. I have written several posts in this forum about how much I like this fillm and how, like you, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is one of the gems of the collection. As I wrote a just few days ago, what makes the film so brilliant is that it can take a slice of everyday life - the gathering of an extended Japanese family, their interactions over several meals, interwoven with interpersonal tensions, quiet demons, and modern vs. traditional cultural themes - and make such a compelling story out of it for a non-Japanese audience.

My answer is no. I can relate to your question since I have asked myself the same thing. I have nearly all the blu-ray releases to date. But although I am a Criterion blu-ray films collector, I cannot bring myself to buy some of their releases. I would rather save the money I would spend on acquiring a film I have no interest in for spending on one I do, knowing there will always be more coming that I want.

I've got four of the Japanese sets:
Nikkatsu Noir
Silent Ozu
Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu
Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties
Koreyoshi Kurahara
I've also got Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara, which is regular Criterion, not Eclipse.
I can recommend all of them if you like Japanese cinema. The quality is very good for DVD, even though the films are very old and their sources vary in quality.
I've not seen any of the other sets, so can't advise on their quality. However, I easily found reviews of all, except the Kurahara set, which is too new.

I love Still Walking. I'm planning to get the blu-ray during the next B&N sale. I found it very elegant and down-to-earth, and it's probably one of the safest blind-buys in the Criterion Collection.
