I'm still waiting for Penelope (the Natalie Wood version, not the Christina Ricci one) to come out on DVD, let alone BD. :P

No on both accounts. 480p just isn't pretty even on a 32 inch.

It depends on the transfer, IMHO. I have BDs that look crappy on my 42" TV, because the transfer is crap, while there are some DVDs that look pretty darn good, albeit not BD quality. My LOTR EE DVDs looked pretty nice on my TV, but my BDs are still better.

DVD is still better than VHS. I hope Disney upgrade Aladdin soon, because it's really not that pretty on my TV.

At this point my viewing preferences are:

1. Theatre/Cinematheque
2. Blu-ray
3. TCM HD

4.DVD

I can't recall the last time I watched a dvd.

For my money, Le Beau Serge is preferable to either The 400 Blows or Breathless. If you would like to watch the film for free you can see it at the following link.

Thanks Monty! Unfortunately, there are no subtitles and I don't understand French.

The film looks pretty good on YouTube and blown up when played on my big TV.

I can't recall the last time I watched a dvd.
I only get TCM SD, but my parents have HD, and agree with their PQ.

I've watched DVDs recently. Heck, I watch the odd digital copy too. I have too many DVDs to get rid of, over 500. I esitmate that 85% of them will never be upgraded to BD. The last DVD I bought before Smile was There But for Fortune, a Phil Ochs documentary that came out in July, and only came out on DVD. Some releases are still doing DVD only, and it's especially true of older titles. Criterion, to my dismay, can't upgrade them all.

I'm upgrading some of my DVDs to BD, but others, either they're not likely BD candidates, or ones I'm not to fussy about PQ on. I don't think I'll totally give up on DVD unless I have to. Different Strokes, for Different Folks I guess.

I still watch a lot of my DVDs and find it's totally dependent upon the transfer.
My Eclipse DVDs look great, as does the original Star Wars trilogy.
I've upgraded a number of films, but I'm more than happy to not upgrade quite a lot - I'm not about to replace a 200-film DVD collection (even if I could).
This is not an argument that DVD is as good as blu-ray and there a number of titles that I felt were important to have in the best possible version.
I don't think DVD is a dead format for viewing, however it's almost dead for retailers.

This. Mind you, I have more DVDs than you. I don't think it's quite dead for retailers, considering a lot of TV shows are still "DVD only." Also, you have guys like my co-worker who claims BDs look no different than DVD, because he has an s-video cable for hook-up, rather than an HDMI.

An absolutely outstanding choice, if I do say so myself...but if you don't have Modern Times already (I don't know, I didn't look at your collection), you really should get it.

I don't have Modern Times yet. It's the next to be obtained.

Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes: 3 Films by Shohei Imamura
This is a bit of a dilemma, because there's a pretty good MoC edition of Pigs & Battleships (which is paired with another film, Stolen Desire), which I'd love to get. However, if Criterion upgrade it, they might include the other two films from their Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes set.
Tough choices. I think I'll continue to sit on this particular fence...

It was on TCM several weeks ago. I think it's OK but a bit stuffy. About a 6/10 in my opinion.

I'm passing on the blu-ray.

The Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes set isn't Eclipse, plus with MoC doing a blu-ray, I have some hope that Criterion will also do some sort of upgrade.
I'm happy to wait and see what happens.
Like others on this forum, I worry that deciding to buying the existing DVDs will immediately result in an announcement of an upgrade

It's been a little while since I've seen it, but I thought it was great. I'd give it an 8/10. I preordered from Amazon as soon as I they announced it...but then again, I preordered 5 of the 7 they listed.

Isn't that Pigs and Battleships region locked? I was looking at some MoC and BFI releases (particularly this one, and Touch of Evil). Many of them seemed to be region locked. Pigs and Battleships specifically says region B (locked) on this site.

Criterion is always locked, but MoC is only locked when they have to. Japanese MoC titles, I think, are always locked B because Japan is region A and they seem to always insist on region locks.

There are several region free MoC blus.

So I finally got around to watching "The Red Shoes" criterion.

Movie: 4.5 / 5

Great performances by the 3 leading actors. Cool sets. Intriguing storyline. Not as predictable as a lot of newer movies. Nice sense of tension throughout.

PQ: mixed bag. I realize this film is very old, which accounts for the shape the master was in. Some scenes look pretty bad, but I guess it's the best they could do with what they had. Other scenes look pretty great.

AQ: Dialog came across as very intelligible. Music was strong and focused. The music really sucked me in to certain scenes- I couldn't watch this movie on mute.

Pleasantly surprised by this one, since I'm a guy and ballet movies aren't usually my cup of tea. But the movie really isn't "about" ballet at all, it's more a story of conflict, ambition, and love. The ending took me by surprise.

It definately puts "Black Swan" into context. Black Swan is a different movie to be sure but it seems to owe so much to the Red Shoes (as many professional reviewers noted).

As a side note, I tried telling some of my co-workers about this movie. One guy loudly questioned my sexuality and laughed at his own cleverness. Another person said that old movies were horrible. I guess to each his own.
