Luckily there's an exact adaption of the word 'revanche' in my native language Estonian (=revanš) so I don't have any problems with understanding the title.

These statements are all very apt considering the film's story.

Default I just watched Wings of Desire

I just watched Wings of Desire for the first time last night. Maybe it was just because I was in the right mood, but that is one of the best films I have seen in ages. It has somewhat renewed my faith in Criterion choosing the movies I should deem important and worth watching as Howards End and so many of the DVD releases have left me puzzled and feeling like a sucker. But then there comes along a movie like Wings of Desire that makes me want to continue my pilgrimage with Criterion and wait for the next release that will somehow change my life forever.

I rewatched it on the Criterion BD today, after many, many years. And for the first time in a truly proper presentation.

Wings is an utterly unique film, for Wenders and for arthouse cinema in general. I'm beyond glad it finally ended up in the Collection, but there are precious few movies out there that can compare. They are simply not being made anymore -- filmmaking being far too literal on all sides of the spectrum.

I suppose Guy Maddin is the only currently active filmmaker that can compare (although he works in a vastly different tonal register), both because of his love of old-school cinema and his intuitive approach to narrative structure. And, well, his movies are b&w too, for what it's worth. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else, including Wenders himself, who, like most of his colleagues, tends to be too preoccupied with social commentary to do something internally vaster like this again.

And, well, nobody shoots like Alekan, not anymore.

I'm so happy to hear everyone's thoughts on Wings. I haven't had a chance to watch the Blu yet, and it's been years since I've seen this film. I'm so excited to revisit it now!

Have their ever been any rumors of a 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile release on Criterion? If not, is it possible at all in the near future? I saw that film that for the first time yesterday, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Go to the Criterion Facebook page and suggest it. Criterion always reads the suggestions by fans.

Dunno about changed my life forever, but I found Last Temptation Of Christ to be of that ilk. Just really caught me off guard, surprised me, wasn't what I'd expected at all. Lots of others too, but this one always seems to pop into my mind when trying to think of one.

People think their favorite films should be Criterion's all the time. (I've heard someone actually pushing for Bill & Ted). Criterion to me is often films that may not get another audience; films that will be loved by some and hated by others, but certainly ones that will resonate after you see them. I think for the first time ever, I saw a film in theatres this weekend and thought it belonged in the Collection.

Most Coen Bros. films are worthy of discussion, but "A Serious Man" will haunt me for a long long time.

EDIT: That wasn't meant as a rag on anyone else who has posted their wishlist here. Apologies if it sounded that way.

Absolutely! Since they have been doing more contemporary films, they should.

Maybe even an Iranian film or two would be awesome.

Sure, at some point it would be fine to introduce such films. But, first and foremost, focus on classic films that deserve to be seen in glorious high-definition.

Tarkovsky, Renoir, Clement, Pasolini, Antonioni, Visconti, Kieslowski, Bresson, Jancso, Angelopoulos...these are the types of directors the Criterion collection needs to focus on.

I know most DO NOT like the digipacks for the CC releases, but I think that the ones for "The Last Metro"(the little cut out circles) and "Last Year At Marienbad" (embossed) are pretty unique!

OK, I know there was a thread somewhere, but all my searches have come up empty. I remember reading that Criterion will allow you to replace the paper sleaves with the newer plastic cases that they are releasing titles in. Anybody got anything solid on this?

Only The Third Man can be replaced now. The rest would be available in November at the earliest.

I wouldn't hold you breath, it might be a while. The current 'Final Cut' release has been holding up pretty well in the CC DVD library. It was a recent transfer I believe.
