EDIT: Sorry...didn't bother reading ahead.
amazon proper was backordered so I went with the only seller that was offering it at retail. didn't take too long--maybe 2 weeks, which is good for a seller from the UK imo. I'm so happy!!
I've only been waited like 6 years to see this film.

Default Delay?

Salo and Harakiri are due out on 10/4, but my pre-order at Criterion.com has it listed as scheduled to ship on 10/6. Usually they ship them days in advance and I receive them on release date or a day early. Next week's releases look to be late. Is anyone else's order showing the same thing?

4) I have no idea what this is about (I never stopped to ask, because after-all, it's Terrance Malick)

I just scrolled down and looked at the screen-shots, and didn't read any of the text.....

I pretty much just planned on blind-buy it, regardless of transfer, review, studio, etc.... because I certainly didn't have the time or availability to catch it in theaters...... It looks like that blind-buy has been tarnished (if you will) because I have now learned more about the film in the last 30 seconds than I knew in the months leading up to now, but nonetheless, I'm going in basically blind, and if these screenshots and the praise from your quote (which again I admit to not reading!) are any indication.... I'm set to be floored!
I'm looking forward to see it proper. The movie theater I went to had such an awful print (only a couple of days after it started playing there) that I suspect they dragged it on the floor to make it look really like film, or something. So I can't wait to fully appreciate the visuals, and try to evaluate the movie itself a bit better.

I'm just excited to see it without the distraction of people walking out every fifteen minutes or so because the were expecting a "standard" Brad Pitt movie.

I'm in Australia and saw Tree of Life in a reputable cinema in the first week of its run and had the same experience with a scratchy print.
Another friend had the same experience.
I read on forums for the film here at blu-ray.com of other people in the US seeing scratchy prints.
At least it sounds like the blu-ray is from a perfect source and with 7.1 audio

I saw it at the first session it played near me (at a film festival), the print was dreadful - like your one, all scratchy and it looked like they didn't even have it properly focussed for the first few minutes. Ugh, and after Malick sent around those instructions to projectionists

What was it with that film? I saw it in a Sony Digital Cinema 4k showing and the audio was out of synch by around 3 seconds for the entire second half of the film.

Well, I went to an art house cinema, so I think most people there already knew that it wouldn't be a typical movie . I still can't get over how bad that print looked. I thought that the smaller theaters treated their prints with more care, but I've seen movies in the local multiplex that looked better. In any case, the Blu-ray looks to be a reference disc (a despicable term). I wonder how many people buy the BD for demonstration purposes, as they do with the Transformers movies .

I really like all of Mallick's work and am very excited to see Tree of Life. I have avoided all the plot details, very well I might add. Don't really know what it's about other then life in general, etc in a poetic Mallick way. Blind buy on day 1 no doubt. Very excited.

I'm extremely glad "The Lady Vanishes", by my all-time favorite director (), is coming out on BD!! What other Hitchcocks do Criterion own at the moment?? Hopefully, they'll release all the ones they have on BD soon

On another note, does any one think that "A Night To Remember" will be released next year?? I mean, any Titanic-related media should be released in 2012. The opportunity to put a "100th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" or "Commemorative Centennary Edition" banner is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the studios!! Any "102th Anniversary" editions would be plain wrong

Meh...I figure what's $7 or $8 in the big scheme of things? I'll gladly pay that for a Malick film in my hands day 1. Besides, I've been burnt by so many other blind buys and impulse buys in the past, overpaying is nothing new

In any case, I'm tossing up getting the French Collectors Edition of TOL - 23 euro on amazon.fr, not to mention their horrendous shipping charges. It's only money, what do I care?

Hmm... "hardcore" fan yet you have a cap limit on what you will spend? How does that work, exactly?

minimum wage job, college student, and I have plenty of hobbies I pay for, as well as the rent and food. $8 is a couple meals for me.

but please, imply I'm not some "true" fan because I'm passing on something that is overpriced as of right now.

It seems as though I like Malick more than most people in this thread, and I plan on waiting to pick this up. I imagine a Brad Pitt movie will move a fair few copies to people who won't know what to think about 3 hours in space texas.

If nothing else, there should be a decent number of gently used copies floating around in a month or two.

Then I can use the money I saved to buy Airplane!

I can't wait if it's not certain there will be a Criterion release or not. And even still, I'm on board for double dipping. It's worth it.

I still don't know why there is this speculation that Criterion will be putting out an edition of Tree of Life.
They haven't said anything and I don't know that there was ever a real hint.
I can't imagine Fox wanting to let go a potential money earner. The film didn't set the box-office on fire, but it did have a fair amount of prestige coming off the critical acclaim and the big win at Cannes. I would say the studio has been waiting for the opportunity to make some real money off blu-ray and DVD sales.
