Basically some early silent film frame rates below 24 frames cannot properly be displayed in progressive scan without it looking too fast in motion or having to insert many duplicate frames in order to sync up properly with the refresh rate.

I'm considering picking it up, how do I check if my equipment is compatible?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Blu-Ray doesn't support 1080p for frame-rates lower than 24 fps (as far as I know) so they have to be transferred in 1080i or duplicate frames can be inserted to make it 24fps but then the film will be longer than intended and even this requires the framerate to be a suitable integer. The Phantom Carriage will be in 1080i regardless of your equipment.

I'm really curious what percentage of Criterions sold are blu-ray.

This is only taking into account titles where blu/dvd is available.

I would bet the vast majority of people would not be able to tell that TPC is presented in 1080i if the booklet had not stated so. (the video looks that good, regardless of being interlaced)

I am getting really excited about the 25th, Island of Lost Souls is going to be epic. (and 1080p ) Surprised no reviews are up yet.

I believe this is because silents were filmed at @18fps. Correct?

Is it true that the Harakiri blu is cropped? Someone is saying this on another forum and I haven't heard anything like that anywhere else.

Yea, that was what I was saying...I didn't hear an outcry of "the 1080i image is not supported!!" and all of that when it was released. I don't think the Amazon issue has anything to do with the image...may have been something else...

Yes, it is. I'd say the MoC release is the way to go if you're region free

Interesting. So do you think this is why TPC was recalled then by Amazon? People thought that 1080i was a defect, but isn't? Again, I got my copy from Amazon, but haven't opened it up yet. Some suggested many received defective copies due to UPS shipping. If that was the case, why pull their initial stock? Just ship in cardboard mailers then. How many of you guys here purchased your copy of TPC from Amazon without any problems?

Rarely do they change their packaging when reshipping. They don't think that far ahead. They still ship cardboard items in bubble bags, they really don't care all that much.

Silent films were shot at a wide variety of frame rates, mostly between 16 and 24 fps. There wasn't a fixed standard. Projectors in those days had a rheostat speed control, which meant that the film could be projected at whatever speed the exhibitor wanted. Films were usually shipped to theaters with an info sheet stating the correct frame rate, but the exhibitors often cheated by increasing it just a bit -- the faster the speed, the less time it took to show the film, and the theater might be able to squeeze in an extra showing during the day (remember many films were less than 60 minutes in the silent days) to get more ticket sales. Filmmakers knew this and gradually sped up their filming rate to try to compensate, which led to "frame rate inflation" -- by 1927, the average rate had jumped from the 16-18 fps used in the 1910s to about 23-25 fps. When the frame rate had to be locked down because of sound, theaters were surveyed to find out what rates they were using, and about 24 was the mean.

To get a rate of say 20 fps (probably the correct rate for PoS, that was what was used for Pandora's Box from around the same time) into a 24 or 30 fps HDTV environment, there are basically three choices: duplicate some frames (like the 3:2 pulldown in NTSC), use interlacing to interpolate the frames, or some combination of both. If interlacing is done well, it can look fine -- basically undetectable in motion. It has a bad rep because if it's done poorly one can see "ghosting" and other detrimental visual artifacts.

So, I think I understand most of this...TPC cannot be 1080p because of the frame rate..makes sense to me. But, why would this be a reason for returns? As in, if the viewers see that in the booklet the presentation is 1080i, why would they believe it to be a mistake?

For people who don't understand what 3:2 pulldown is you probably don't know to check your TV and see if it does refresh rates in multiples of 24hz for Bluray's. Switching to 48hz ,72 hz etc provides a extremely smooth Bluray experience for the majority of content since it eliminates the extra frames thrown in during the 3:2 pull down.

I'm sure this a pretty much known by most people here, but it just appeared a few of you have no idea about this.
I know once I figured it out it was like night and day to me.

So, anybody pre-ordered Kuroneko? I was going to get it from Planet Axel because they ship early, but they boosted their shipping fee.
