I'm also very interested in The Phantom Carriage and hope to order it during the same B&N sale, perhaps along with People on Sunday.

On this, the release date of The Tree of Life (via Fox), I want to express my feeling that I still think this masterpiece will be given the Criterion treatment within the next year or two.
The reasons behind by hunch: 1. The extras on today's Fox release are quite slim (though of a nice quality). 2. There's a Criterion release of every feature from director Terrence Malick except for the two (Badlands and The New World) controlled by Warner Bros. and its subsidiaries, which historically seem to frown on licensing the films in its catalog to other studios for rerelease (though I once read somewhere that Warner is thinking of making an exception for Malick on Criterion; I don't know how true that is). 3. Criterion has an ongoing relationship with Fox, where Fox films are released by Criterion. For example, Bigger than Life, Walkabout, The Thin Red Line and 3 Women. 4. The Tree of Life seems to fit well with the sorts of artistic, intellectual and thought-provoking titles the Criterion Collection is known for. It's just a gut feeling, but here's hoping I'm right. I'd love to see that become a reality. |

My copy of The Four Feathers shipped over the weekend, although I see that Amazon's product description page now says that the retailer will have it back in stock on October 14th. It seems odd, but it looks as if the store didn't buy enough stock of this title.

Off-topic to Criterion, but since I know Mods read this,
Fassbinder's Despair needs updating on the site. The release date is now November 15th. Don't know if you all update features either, but here is Olive Film's site listing if you want a look: http://www.olivefilms.com/films/despair-blu-ray/ We don't have a thread I believe for Olive Films so this is the next best thing for me to post this on. |

So was Criterion waiting for all three Transformers movies to come out to release a boxset? Maybe they could Blu-Ray their existing Bay movies, have a Bay Boxset they wouldn't need to release anything else for the rest of the year because that's pretty much the perfect release

![]() ![]() Fair enough. Don't expect Criterion to get the rights for the Transformers movies, even *if* they wanted them, which I can with most certainty assure you that they do not. The Transformers films are definitely not what most would describe as, in my opinion, 'Criterion Worthy'. Criterion only owns the rights for (2) Michael Bay Films, 'The Rock', and 'Armageddon'. To be honest, it still surprises me that they wanted the rights to release 'The Rock', and 'Armageddon'. It's nothing against the films, they are good for what they are, but I certainly couldn't put them in the same class as a majority of their other releases. |
