Question, is it possible to manipulate your Amazon Gold Box so that a Criterion title appears in it? I've been trying to do that for a while now since I have a lot of Criterion titles in my recommendations list (some near the top of my list too), but none of them ever seem to show up in my Gold Box at all.

Is it just bad luck on my end or is there something else going on here?

Try keeping them in your Cart and 'Save For Later' so that you're always notified when price changes occur. Almost all of the items I keep in my Cart have shown up as a Gold Box item, at least, once.

I've kept Days of Heaven in my cart for a while. It still hasn't popped up in my Gold Box yet. And adding that to my cart was the reason that a whole bunch of Criterion titles started showing up on my recommendations list.

I don't know if they've changed anything, but it was definitely possible to manipulate the Goldbox previously. Basically it involves purchasing, rating and wishlisting items 'related' to the movie you want (e.g. titles that show up in the section 'people who bought [item you want] also bought [item you should rate/wishlist]'). I'm sure you can find guides if you Google it. I did it several times but it requires quite a lot of manual clicking (mainly checking 'not interested' for most of the recommendations) and isn't really worth it in my opinion for such a small discount.

As I recall though, don't put the items you actually want in your cart or wishlist, as this prevents them from appearing in the Goldbox. I guess the rationale is that the Goldbox is meant for impulse purchases, and if you have it in your wishlist or cart then Amazon knows you'll probably purchase it sooner or later for full price anyway.

Okay, thanks for the tip.

You know CG, that would not surprise me at all. Remember, Criterion's new business model is to re-release everything before they put new titles out....because that is what sells...

Apu Trilogy, Anatomy of a Murder, Frampton set and a Hal Ashby film confirmed for future Criterion releases at that Wexner Center for the Arts link that was posted a page back (they are being interviewed by stream).

Hmm...Hal Ashby, huh? Anyone have any guesses as to which film they may be referring to/has the best chance of being part of the collection?

I don't think it's a high possibility but I would love it if they announced In the Mood for Love.

So excited for the Apu Trilogy !!!!! I will go the extra mile right now and say it has the potential to be the best release in 2012 (Maybe as November's box-set?). Preminger in the way of Anatomy of a Murder are incredible news too .

Now, regarding tomorrow, I can't help but feel a bit dissapointed by the high possibility of another Anderson release in January . I mean, I don't hate Anderson and I quite enjoy his films but with so many other things as possibilties I would place Anderson very far from the top of my wishlist. Still, I think it will be a good seller and I am sure a possible announcement will make some people happy. Here are my guesses for tomorrow...

- The Royal Tennenbaums
- Gojira
- Belle de Jour
- World on a Wire
- The Moment of Truth
- Wild Strawberries

To be honest, I think I am being overly optimistic right there. Criterion must compensate the "not-so-fan" of Anderson crowd giving us some Fassbinder .

1. Apu trilogy might take until 2013 (they said will take some time).

2. They could announce anything tomorrow as long as they release a Fassbinder finally.

I got a strong feeling it's going to be "Harold and Maude." I remember watching a show on AMC (possibly a special festival episode of "Sunday Morning Shootout") probably about five years ago stating how "Harold and Maude" was being re-discovered by european cinephiles as a well-respected piece of art.
Along with its re-emergence as a well-respected piece of art, I think it's pretty safe to say "Harold and Maude" had a strong influence on at least one of Criterion's golden boys. Can ya guess who?

I just can't believe the Apu trilogy has been confirmed and everybody seems to be sleeping or something.

Plus the Hollis Frampton boxset is going to be awesome (though it was highly rumored for sometime, so no big surprise).

I just attended the screening of Island of Lost Souls at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio and won a copy of the film on blu-ray. Criterion producers Kim Hendrickson and Susan Arosteguy were there and discussed their work. At the end of their discussion they gave away a few prizes for answering trivia questions. I got the easy question: What is the name of the only film directed by Charles Laughton? A lot of people raised their hands but mine was first. I didn't realize until I got home that the blu-ray had not yet been released.
