A) Are there any Criterion BD that are or soon to be OOP?
B) How many non-story films are there in BD? Example: Gimmie Shelter

I don't really care for the documentaries or concerts at this moment.

While we're asking questions, I have one:

Would anyone be kind enough to recommend some science fiction films put out by Criterion? I'm planning to pick up Videodrome.

I've got to be honest, I don't care for foreign cinema, which rules out the majority of Criterion's DVD/Blu-ray era releases

Some that I would like to check out are the Royal Tenenbaums (saw in theatres years ago) and the aforementioned Gimme Shelter. Picked up The Life Aquatic yesterday for $5 (single disc), wasn't all that crazy about it...

So my question is, do you like Avatar? Inception? Twilight? (just examples. You might.) They are well known and make more money than anything we have talked about in this forum. They are "rated" highly with people. If you dislike those, well, shouldn't you be a snob? At what level does "snob" start?
Those aren't "classic" films (except Avatar MAY well be in the future). So that's not really the same thing at all.

I never said popular and classic went hand in hand. And I know the general public typically likes more junk than good. But It's one thing to constantly put down Twilight, and another to constantly put down Seven Samurai.

A) The only BDs out of print are The Third Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Pierrot le Fou.

B) Concert films are: Gimme Shelter and the Monterrey Pop collection (2 BDs). I have both. MP collection is one of the best concert films ever. As some have pointed out here, together they form a "bookend" to the 1960s music scene.

Documentaries are: Crumb, The Times of Harvey Milk, and For All Mankind (although FAMK is really different from your standard documentary type film you may be used to. I would recommend it highly. It is a gem of the collection, a powerful and poetic tribute movie to the Apollo space program).

Non-story films other than the categories above: I would put By Brakhage here, a collection of experimental short films.

I may be forgetting some.

Oh, yeah....I would also put Pierrot le Fou into the non-story films as well
[Show spoiler](just kidding....couldn't resist after the earlier posts today )

Default Harakiri

My apologies is this has already been covered but there are nearly 2k pages...

Any who, does anyone know if Criterion has acknowledged the cropping issue on their blu-ray release of Harakiri and if they are going to fix it?

Thank you

Just ordered my first 4 Criterions:

1. Bottle Rocket
2. Videodrome
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
4. Pre-ordered Dazed & Confused

I plan on ordering the Darjeeling Limited, Antichrist, Repulsion, The Thin Red Line & pre-ordering Rushmore fairly soon.

I just bought Videodrome too; I've really grown to love it. I'd recommend Terry Gilliam's Brazil, though it's only available on DVD.

There's also The Man Who Fell to Earth (OOP), The Blob (DVD), Time Bandits (DVD) and Solaris of the top of my head.

I have not seen any written response from Criterion on the issue you mention. I am quite certain that Criterion knows about the framing abnormality, so I would not hold your breath on something being done to "fix " it.

Pot meet kettle, you're sounding very snobby there. I for the record love Seven Samurai, and hate Twilight in all shapes and forms, but everyone's taste is subjective. Spider Baby's not a Kurosawa fan, nor would I consider him/her to be a snob because he/she likes other things. I think you're venturing into snob territory here by insisting that Seven Samurai is a classic, and are giving the appearance that anyone who disagrees is wrong.

As spider Baby pointed out, what level does snob start? Again, that's subjective, as right now I think you're a film snob, whereas others, including yourself might not. Maybe a person doesn't mean to come across as an insufferable film snob or *******, but has a different way of communicating. Also, if it's online communication, that throws a whole other wrench in the works where people misconstrue text and tone.

Can we get back to whining about cases, CC titles not out yet, the upcoming B&N sale, and other things that we usually talk about that often have nothing to do with the films in the collection?

Criterion posted a picture of Klaus Kinski on their facebook page yesterday because it was his birthday.

Before I knew what it was for, I thought maybe Criterion got their hands on Aguirre: The Wrath Of God. I really wish someone would put this out.

Gojira's been pre-ordered from Canadian amazon as it's like 28.49 right now: http://www.amazon.ca/Criterion-Colle...9016401&sr=8-1 no sign of it on the US site yet. I watched La Strada last night, and I want an upgrade of it. TCM had it on Saturday night, and I PVRed it, as I kept hearing good things about it from this forum. Giulietta Masina is just so adorable, you just want to give her a hug.

I saw that, I really like the quote that came with it to

"One should judge a man mainly from his depravities. Virtues can be faked. Depravities are real."

I agree, not classics. The way I see it you can't call a movie not even a decade old a classic. Now a days people are just to quick on jumping on the "classic" band wagon just because they really like the movie and it's making a sh1t load of money. A movie making money does not equal making it a classic. I think movies need age (a bit like cognac ) in order to gain status. Time is the great equalizer.

I disagre however that it's different putting down Twillight then Seven Samurai. Movies are movies, art forms and everyone will like different things. Just because I feel Twillight is horrible (which I do ) I still would not go into a Twillight thread and keep saying it's bad to those who enjoy the series. Great for them if they enjoy the movie, myself I have lot's of other movies to enjoy.

The first Twilight had some camp/novelty value (although I wouldn't re-watch it) but the rest are so mind-numbingly boring I almost fell into a coma.

I watched Seven Samurai after seeing Rashomon, Ran, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, and I thought it was a bit boring despite the fact that I really enjoyed those other ones, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.

All of the supplements are incredibly informative and entertaining as well. The Devo short film is awesome/bizarre. Overall, it's an excellent release, for sure.

To be fair, Seven Samurai does take a while to get started, the early parts can be a bit slow compared to other movies.

It might be better to ask someone that works at Criterion. The titles that are currently OOP are listed as such on Criterion's site, but there is no indication of future OOP titles.

Have you seen Nights Of Cabiria, yet? If you enjoyed La Strada I think you'll enjoy the former, as well.
