Yeah, The Magician is kind of like Bergman lite... it's well done, as are all his films, and beautifully shot, but it's a throw-away story. It's not an emotional classic like Seal, Cries & Whispers, Through A Glass Darkly, The Silence, Persona, or Fanny & Alexander.

Lost Highway hasn't been mentioned much here it seems, but I was very disappointed with mk2's Blu release. Very soft PQ (although some should be expected considering the way it was filmed, but it could look much better IMO). Even the AQ sounded a bit flat & dull compared to the mk2 Limited Edition DVD (which actually did pack more of a punch than the Blu-Ray which was noticeably quieter in places.)

Sure hope Criterion is at least considering adding one Lynch picture to their library, if it is at all possible. Such a glaring omission in their otherwise impressive lineup.
I would think Lost Highway is the most likely to go to Criterion, since it was produced by October Films, which has rolled into company after company since then. Topsy Turvy was also produced by October, so there's that. In addition, the Lost Highway DVD that took 11 years ot get released was finally put out by Universal, and we all know that Uni has licensed several titles to Criterion already.

I have my fingers crossed for a release of Far From Heaven since it is owned by Universal / Focus Features.

My friend ranks The Magician with those titles, he considers Smiles of a Summer Night to be a "throw away" title. Of your list, Persona is his absolute fave.

I went through a long thought process before signing up...would I really use it other than Criterion sales, etc. Turns out I am glad I got it. But that is because I am centrally located to three stores well stocked with movies and none more than three miles away. There are two more stores fifteen miles away.

However, if it weren't for that coupon site where you can actually find the coupons, it would be a worthless membership for me. With those coupons, I have saved a ton of money between the stores. I only buy movies at B&N, and lately have done almost all my movie buying from them since they have had two Criterion 50% off sales and a 40% off all BD sale since July.

It can be a bit of a game, though, to get them to take certain coupons.
Still, between three nearby stores, I generally have no problems.

My question is why would anyone buy books at B&N? Their in-store prices are full MSRP, they don't price match their website, and their coupons are not nearly good enough to make a books a value.
That's right oildude, the memberships are $25 now. They used to be $50 when they actually had better benefits. The problem I have is the bold text. It is their coupons and you still have to jump through hoops, as I have seen a few more posts about not taking the coupons on top of the sale. Honestly, if you are driving 30 miles round trip to save an extra $5 here and there off the $17.99 (after 10% off order coupon) retail online price, then you have time and patience on your hands. UPS just dropped off the 3 I ordered yesterday morning with tax at $57. Just does not seem to make much sense to me, unless the store is literally on your way. Then you have to hope the item is in stock, which I have read other posts about that too. The gas, time and dealing with people (clerks and mallrats) just seem amusing when the online deal is just as good and shipping is fast. That was pretty much my wayward point, but then again, I am becoming an old-lazy codger these days...

Indeed. I would love Sunrise on BD. I would prefer a CC to MOC.

I stumbled upon this FAKE Criterion cover for Donnie Darko. I so wish it was real. Criterion seriously needs to release this movie right away. It's actually a pretty cool fan cover art.

Yes.... the terrible reviews have caused me to hold off on it. I have the DVD, which I'm sticking to for the time being unless it gets REALLY cheap...

I almost jumped on it for the AQ jump, which really drives the film in my opinion.

I'm a member and for this sale, I have gotten lucky so far. In the recent past, NO $39.99 BD that was scanned at the register at either of the (2) local stores by me were allowing the use of the $8 coup. I made (2) separate transactions for "Island" and the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set. Both deducted the $8 after being scanned in the "proper order" and there was no need for the cashier to "override" the transaction, for the coup to work.

I'm pleasantly confused about this!?

The more I see your choices posted (and I've read your BD list, as well)...the more that I see that we both seem to have here same great taste in films.

You have a great sandwich there...2+ great silents and the filling inside could be two of the best CC releases this year (eh, Spidey?!)

It's okay for your friend to be wrong. Smiles of a Summer Night is definitely not a throw away, however it's a comedy... so it doesn't compare with his serious films anyway. The Magician is also semi-whimsical... it was Bergman making a movie about the criticisms of his films, and also has no correlation with his more serious meditations on life, religion, and faith. It's essentially a comedy as well, although a dark one.

That's right. I think the consensus on the review of the PQ was the way the film was shot it wasn't going to look spectacular in HD.

Yes, but I think the film could benefit from a Criterion release. The PQ and AQ on both Fox Blu-ray releases are very weak. I think the film needs a better transfer and release, it's one of my favorites ever. Plus I think it's a perfect film that will suit the Criterion Collection line and will get a lot of sales from the fans of the film. I own 3 copies of the film already, but i'd definitely go for a 4th if it was Criterion.
