Thank you! I didn't think anyone would recognize it, given its small size and all..

I cannot think of a film more deserving of a release stateside (for me, personally, that is)

I totally agree...I just watched it again about a week ago for my October horror marathon and I was blown away, like always. It has everything I want in a horror film.

I think you are selling The Magician short here. The film does examine deeper issues of a "more serious" nature, for example the conflict between the two main character's views on science and the mysteries of the supernatural (or the unknown and unexplainable). Various other topics such as illusion, reality, the facade of appearances, and class structure are examined as well.

I have to also mention that The Magician is one of the most beautiful B&W film I have ever seen.

There is a 15% off online one (that of course can be added to the already discounted 50% off that shows up already on the site):

I would say Rules of the Game, but it's not out yet (the 15th).

Default Criterion on iTunes

Has anyone rented or bought from the new iTunes "Criterion Collection"? I'm so tempted to get Hunter in the Dark. It's not even released by them on DVD or Blu-ray, is it? But $14.99 for a protected digital copy?!?

No, it's a FAKE fan cover art that someone made. I was just saying I WISH Donnie Darko had a Criterion release. Trust me if it was gonna be released I would be there day 1.

Yes it does, but it still doesn't carry the gravity that a film like, say, Cries & Whispers carries. It's almost a farce in comparison. Bergman is my favorite director, so I'm very familiar with all his works, and regardless, I consider this 2nd Tier Bergman, and was even made with a wink on the sly. It's still a great film, I just don't rank it up there with his masterpieces, nor do I feel that it's one of his more "important" films.

I mean, it's basically Von Sydow playing Bergman, and Bjornstrand playing film critic Harry Schein. That in itself carries a comical undertone that makes it more of a fun film, than a serious meditation into the psyche.

The game is set for a criterion release early next year. I read an interivew with Fincher earlier this year saying it was coming.

Is Carlos a worthy purchase? I've been meaning to watch the three parts but haven't had a chance. It seems like a delicious package.

I liked it. That didn't surprise me but I was very surprised at how well it held my interest over the course of 5+ hours. It never felt bloated and didn't even really drag at all.

I don't know if it will have a lot of replay value but I'm definitely looking forward to watching it again.

Smiles of a Summer Night might be considered Bergman-lite, but I adored it
