I would add that one to my collection. I still need to get Stagecoach. Too bad WB's stingy and already released The Searchers on BD. It would have been perfect. I suppose Criterion could rescue McLintock! from Public Domain Hell like they did with Charade.

McLintock! was rescued on the Paramount / Batjak DVD release, they re-issued many of the Waynes and some like McLintock! that was public domain. Now Paramount needs to just release more of those titles on Blu.

It's been a wonderful B&N sale for me as I managed to pick up (among others) Carlos and pre-ordered Fanny and Alexander, which led me to reflect upon the fantastic year we have been blessed with from Criterion releases. Looking back (and forward) on the 2011 releases I find it very hard to pick a top 5. My favorites:

Three Colors Trilogy
Complete Jean Vigo
People on Sunday
Double Life of Veronique
Army of Shadows/Fanny and Alexander

Thank you Criterion for a great year!

La Dolce Vita should be top priority (or license it to Criterion, please...).

Could be fun to list my top 5 (or it might have to be 10), but I don't know how to find a list of this year's releases...

The more I read these boards (not just this thread), the more I see other people doing an October Halloween movie marathon. Pretty cool...

Suspiria does deserve the attention of the CC. Fo' sho'.

That's what she said...and you get to see it as well.

I went to http://criterionforum.org/ and on the left hand side of the page it has Upcoming releases - at the bottom of that it has a category called Complete Criterion Calendar. Go to that page and you can find the yearly listing. And yes, 5 choices leaves off some great movies.

Firstly, you're right - there have a lot of great films this year. Even a top ten would be tough.
My top five, in no particular order:
Three Colours
Carlos
Battle of Algiers
Army of Shadows
The Rules of the Game

I feel I should apologise to all the great releases I didn't list.
I've bought 33 this year (including the ones I ordered in the B&N sale) and I've enjoyed all of them. More than half were blind-buys.

Does anyone know if there are plans to bring the The Samurai Trilogy to Bluray? (Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto, Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island). I think it's Mifune at his best.

Like Che, Carlos takes itself very seriously - in the good 'gravitas' sort of way. I never got the feeling Carlos was a fictional or overly dramatized character. He always came across as an historical figure (and that definitely wasn't the case with Mesrine).

Like Mesrine, the characters, events and storytelling methods are very engaging and very interesting. There's far less action but Carlos is no less riveting...in fact, I thought it was quite a bit more interesting overall and at times even more suspenseful (though definitely in its own way).

And like Vincent Cassel, Edgar Ramirez flat out owns every scene he's in. That's not a knock on Bdt...he was very good in Che but Ramirez was just overpowering.
Sounds great, thanks! You've convinced me to keep my order.

DVDBeaver review of Fanny and Alexander is up. Looks like the TV version is on disc 1, theatrical on disc 2 and supplements on disc 3. Average bitrates are 17.99 Mbps (TV) and 28.48 Mbps (Theatrical).

That review talks about slight cropping on the sides. Is it just me or is Criterion doing this to like all of their movies now?

Fanny & Alexander was shot in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This is the ratio that Criterion's disc is presenting.

DVDBeaver is stating that the Criterion blu-ray is cropped on the sides only because the other disc's aspect ratio has been opened up to 1.85:1 and showing more information on the sides. The Criterion disc is correct.

Ah. Okay. The way they worded it got me confused. What with Kuroneko, Harakiri, and Dazed and Confused being slightly cropped...

Are you referring to the current B&N Sale? If so, there have been plenty of coupons repeatedly posted in the thread that's in the Sales forum.
