It is probably just wishful thinking, but is that James Mason from Odd Man Out?

I need to get my eyes checked.

Only 2 I got today. They didn't have any of the others I was thinking about getting. Guy said he'd order them in for me so they'd be there within the sales' dates.

I love this sale! Money well-spent!

I picked up both High and Low and The Phantom Carriage online and thought I could be happy with just that. But tonight I caved and went to the source adding The Killing, Island of Lost Souls, and House.

The Leopard is probably in my top ten of all time, so for me it is very re-watch-able.
I like both Senso and Lola Montes, but even though they're much shorter, I don't see myself re-watching them often.
Someone else asked about Barry Lyndon and that is also in my personal top ten. I don't think they compare beyond the superficial fact that they're both long period films. They're different in story, theme, subtext, style, tone, everything.
Having said all that, The Leopard is a 3 hour period film, so I can understand some people might think it is boring.

Just thought I would post that I just saw "Le Havre", directed by Aki Kaurismaki, and thought it was great. It was very charming and hilarious, like many of Kaurismaki's films. However, it also treated some very sensitive issues in both a light (but respectful) manner and a serious one at the same time- something I always like to see. At times, I couldn't help being recalled of "L'Atalante"- and not just because of the setting!

I would love if the rumors that Criterion will be releasing it are true. It is very deserving.

Yeah, I have a feeling that February is going to blow January out of the water. Sans Soleil/La Jetee is already a must for me (I was tempted to pick it up this sale but not any more ). Let hope that greatly awaited World on a Wire release becomes truth. Also, just in case there is any doubt about it, here is the capture from Sans Soleil...

I am looking to pick up a few more Eclipse sets before the sale ends. I know I will get the Kurahara set in the next couple of days. Others I am looking at possibly getting are the Basil Dearden London Underground set and another Japanese cinema set a few folks have recommended here.

If anyone has other Eclipse recommendations, send them my way please.
If you're interested in Japanese cinema, I highly recommend Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara.
It's not an Eclipse set, it's a regular Criterion box-set. There are four discs; a film on each disc, including an accompanying video essay for each film, and more extras and four of his short films on the fourth disc. There is also a nice booklet.

Big possibility that Criterion will release Steve McQueen's Shame at some point?

I hope so as well. Hopefully the 3 or 4 (still don't know what the number is, but I know the 3 I posted belong to Criterion) will be released soon, and maybe they can grab some more up.

Thanks for the recommendation. I followed your link and this is something I need to look into further. As I said in earlier posts, I am early into my journey into Japanese cinema beyond the Kurosawas and the monster movies I grew up watching. I am liking what I have discovered through Criterion Collection so far.

They did Hunger, might as well do Shame. That movie looks incredible - I hope to see it whenever it plays in theaters.

I sure wouldn't mind that! Although I guess that won't be for some time...since the theatrical release isn't for another month here.

It looks like the Three Colours films are presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
I'd assumed they would be in 1.66:1, as per The Double Life of Véronique and many other European films.
Does anyone know if the films were projected in different ratios around the world?

I just finished Harakiri and instead of gushing about this and raving about that all I'm going to say is I now have to decide whether I want to immediately rent The Human Condition or wait for a possible upgrade.

God, I love these freaking sales...

Don't know if it is even being considered for a blu upgrade at the present time, but The Human Condition is incredible! I also would recommend Fires on the Plain for a fascinating look at the suffering of the common Japanese soldier during the war. Both great movies that I am happy to own on DVD.

Human Condition was released September 2009 when Criterion had gone Blu-ray whilst still choosing some releases to only get DVD treatment. Human Condition was one of them, so I'd be surprised if it did get an upgrade anytime soon, perhaps even ever.

Edit: Did Criterion at the time ever offer any explanation as to why titles like this didn't get BD releases there and then? I can understand if there is a problem with the source elements or if the title is predicted to be a very poor seller, but the Human Condition is a pretty big release, was a newly restored HD transfer and looks great on DVD. That same month Criterion re-released Pierrot le fou and The Complete Monterey Pop Festival on Blu

So instead of going all out blu like I did the last couple of sales, I'm trying to pick up a few sets as well. I have Eisenstein: The Sound Years on the way and was looking at the Three War Films by Andrzej Wajda set. Anybody have any thoughts concerning it? All the films sounds really interesting.
