Any thoughts on "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence?" After viewing "In the Realm of the Senses," I want to add more Ôshima to the collection.

Have you already got the Eclipse set, Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties?
I've watched the first three and I've been satisfied with the quality of the DVDs.

If that's the case, please pick them both up!

just when I thought I was done with the sale, my psychology teacher gives us an extra credit assignment that requires us to go to Barnes & Noble. Looks like I'm picking up the Phantom Carriage and Salo

What's the chance of seeing a blu release of Onibaba?, since there is now a blu release of Kuroneko.(the holograpic artwork is pretty cool on that one IMO!)

I watched The Phantom Carriage last night and absolutely loved it. I was intrigued by the description and the short clip on the Criterion site, but almost didn't buy it because I thought I might watch it only once and be done with it. I can say now that this is one that I will come back to. The story was very moving and the BD looked great, even for a 90-year old film. Of the two scores, I much prefer the chamber music, which seems to put me in the minority.

I've got a limit of the 3 Blus that I can afford to get in the B&N sale. I'll put my list in here:

The Killing
The Rules of the Game
400 Blows
Bottle Rocket
Double Life of Veronique
Last Year at Marienbad
Red Shoes
Shock Corridor
Au Revoir Les Enfants
The Naked Kiss
Pierrot Le Fou

I'm leaning towards The Killing, Bottle Rocket, and Pierrot Le Fou. Is Pierrot really worth it, or will I are if I don't ever see it?

All the films would be blind buys for me so if anybody can point out some kind of instant classic, I'd appreciate that. I'm a big film noir fan and I love good dialogue.

Forgot to mention that the extra $15 on Yojimbo/Sanjuro makes the purchase unaffordable for me at the present time So it'd have to be one of the others.

Sorry, should have removed it from my list.

EDIT: I'll edit the two-pack out of my list now, actually.

It all depends on what you are looking for ! If you want classic film titles here are my recommendations...

- The Red Shoes
- The Rules of the Game
- The Last Year at Marienbad

Then, if you want more variety (Which is not really needed seeing how the list above is a true winner) and/or more obscure films I will go with...

- Double Life of Veronique
- The Killing
- Pierrot le Fou

So there they are, if I can add anything it would be for you to consider the first list. Every title in that list is worth it and I am sure you will not be disappointed (Without adding to the fact that those are must-have for any film buff ).

Thanks for the advice!
The thing is, I am considering your first list as well. I want every one of these movies, and evidently, so do most people haha. I hate having bills to pay.

Saw Breathless and I thought it was great. This was my first Godard and I loved it. Anyone have any recommendations for my next Godard purchase? I'm leaning towards Vivre se Vi.

I'd go with:
The double life of Veronique
The red shoes
The naked kiss (I suppose I'm alone in this one - masterpiece)

If you like film noir then The Killing is a no brainer. Plus, you get Killers Kiss as well, so that's two films for the price of one. Also don't know if you've seen it or own it but Kiss Me Deadly is a great film noir.

The reason Kiss Me Deadly isn't on my current list is because I may be getting it for Christmas this year - I'm looking forward to seeing it!

I would think that CC will release this at some point. MoC has already indicated that it is a potential/probable re-release.

I'm thinking of picking up The Vanishing, the synopsis sounds pretty good.

What's everyones opinion on it?

Excellent mystery/thriller, you really have no clue what direction it will go in.
