Mr. Christmas, Mr. Lawrence was the second Criterion I bought when I made the jump into the collection during the blu-ray era. I had it on a VHS tape for years. To go from seeing it on VHS to seeing it on BD was a revelation. It is one of the most intelligent and moving war films I have seen.

The brutality of the Japanese toward the Allied POWs, the brutality of Japanese officers to lesser ranks of their own army, the fact that the camps were not staffed by the cream of the Japanese army, the contempt for prisoners who lost all honor by surrender, all of that is captured in the film. Yet in the end it is a story of redemption, brought about through the character of Bowie. Oshima transcends your standard war movie, creating an allegorical tale that I think is sublime and powerful.

Pierrot Le Fou was sold out at my BN so I guess Godard is important

re: Pierrot le Fou

StudioCanal has a region A/B BD of it. Apparently the colors are not as accurate (Criterion transfer was cinematographer-approved or something) -- but I find that the detail is better resolved. So even if the Criterion Blu becomes impossible to find, there'll be another good option to choose from.

It's a shame that StudioCanal didn't give Ran the same treatment.. (didn't Criterion lose the license to StudioCanal for both titles? Either way, SC's Ran BD is awful)

Correct SpiderBaby. These are running stats. That current #15 rank for Pierrot le fou is merely a spike...probably due to its out of print status. Most Criterion collectors know that when this company declares a title OOP, they mean it...often for years...sometimes forever. So collectors are all over it ASAP.

So I just finished watching House...that was one of the craziest, random, and entertaining films I've seen in awhile. Great blind-buy!

There's some effective parts to it and the ending is great, but overall I found it to be just "pretty good."

I thought a couple of the effective parts were good enough to raise the overall to a bit better than pretty good but yeah, some degree of 'good' sounds about right.

A couple pages ago, I asked for advice on a list of films I wanted to order from B&N. I had a limit of three. I just made my order and wanted to let anybody know who offered advice what I chose and why I may have listened to, or ignored, their advice. It was a very hard decision and I wish I had a whole lot more money! I ordered:

The Killing - I love film noir and this sounds like the perfect Kubrick film to me, which may be blasphemous but whatever. Glad a couple people said it was great - and a close friend that I know who runs a used store said to go for it too.

Bottle Rockets - Honestly? Recently life has been sucking and this looked like a good cheery film that might pick me up a little bit. Truth be told, this sale is partly retail therapy for me right now. And pick-me-ups are good.

Pierrot Le Fou - I've never seen any Godard, so I hope I made the right choice. I forever regret not getting The Third Man before it went OOP and before it got impossible to find, so I used that model to get this instead of 400 Blows or Red Shoes. Both of which are very high on my list when it comes to 4-6.

If I were able to get even three more, I would have gotten 400 Blows, The Red Shoes, and it probably would have come down to Au Revoir Les Enfants or The Double Life of Veronique.

Thanks to everybody for their help and I'm sorry if I ended up brushing aside your suggestion. If any of you want to send me some money, I'll happily order three more

You know what retablo, I apologize for the past arguments. It's stupid really to get into it about these things. I will say this, from here on out, you won't here a negative put down about any movie or filmmaker from me again. That way, no more of these page(s) long discussions and everyone can get along in that aspect (of course there are those discussions I have no part of, like the case arguments or what have you). I'm actually calling for a truce because we headbutted for too long, it's just silly and at the end of the day, useless.

Haven't really seen much mention of Leon Morin, Priest. Thinking about picking it up this week. Any opinions? Thanks.

I picked it up on the strength of Melville/Belmondo but didn't expect a whole lot and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

It's very dialogue heavy (go figure) but much more engaging than I expected and extremely well made. It could have very easily been trite or melodramatic but I can't recall a single eye-roll.

I wouldn't put it on any must-have-blind-buy lists but it's very solid and I'm glad I took a chance on it.

House was a crazy film. I liked it, but not enough to own it yet. I was wondering if anyone's opinion of House changed for the better after a 2nd viewing?

What do you mean by changed for the better? I still thought it was crazy and funny when I was watching it for the second time.

What I mean is after I watched it for the first time, I decided I did not want to own it. But sometimes movies get better after a 2nd viewing and I was wondering if anyone else liked it more after watching for a 2nd time.

At this point, I can't imagine what, if anything, would prompt me to watch House again Todd. As an everything-including-the-kitchen-sink "video happening", it was stunned silly fun...but months later, nothing about it has really stuck, compelling me to spin it up again.

That isn't really a criticism either, just a statement of its cummulative effect on one viewer, me. Although I enjoyed its loopy energy while watching it, I just didn't feel any deeper 'hooks'...something...anything...to nag me back. Maybe given some time and distance though, you never know...

Unless another 20% online coupon hits after the current one expires, I may not purchase The Leopard and hold off until the next BN Criterion sale. So in it's place, I'm curious, would people say House is a worthy replacement?

Also, in regards to Repulsion which I finally watched, I wonder if that inspired much of Black Swan at all. Not my personal favorite but it was effective.
