Just got all my three orders in the mail today ( Island of Lost Souls, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Killing). I only watched Island of Lost Souls for the first time and I have to say, I absolutely loved it, it could a contender for my second favorite Criterion tied with House (1977). The atmosphere, the acting, the makeup, just everything about it was great.

Somehow the drawing did not made me think of that, it as more of a Kurosawa feel to it but you may be right.

Island of Lost Souls is my current favorite. Great movie and great supplements. I really need to watch it with commentary soon. I love horror movies and this is one of the best. Hope to see criterion release some more classic horror in the future.

I was thinking of picking that up, but wasn't sure how good it was. The layout is incredible, it's good to hear it's a quality film. Gonna have to buy it now.

On that note, I watched a really wild pre code film today called Kongo (1932) with Walter Huston. I found this in a cool Pre code horror suggestion list.

If you enjoyed Island of Lost Souls you should take a look at these.

Man, I am stuck between 3 titles.
Videodrome
Cronos
Le Cercle Rouge (never watched any other Melville, this would be the first)
Orpheus (sp)

I prefer to get another title that isn't 1:33, but I heard good things about Orpheus.

Need to make a choice, but I am at an impass.

I've seen like half of those movies on that list expect Kongo and Old Dark House. I love classic horror, it's horror at its finest. If only Criterion could release Universal Horror classics or Night of the Living Dead, that would be amazing.

I'm thinking the new title may be Rashomon, considering that a recent HD restoration of it (2009 I believe) is already available for Criterion to use on their release.

I just ordered Videodrome a week ago and got it the other day. Finally watched it for the first time last night. It's amazing. It still holds up so well. I highly recommend it. The extras are great too.

cstle beat me to it, but yeah, this makes the most sense. and if not this teased release, feasibly by year's end.

I dig the film, so I'm up for it getting the upgrade, but I'd much prefer Throne of Blood or Ikiru. Or, you know, more Oshima/Mizoguchi

I'm glad you asked this actually. Something Mr. SB still has yet to see, is films from Shimizu. I have been waiting for the 15th (announcements) before I order some things from the B&N sale (to save some money for future titles, just need to see how much for Feb titles after just wanting the Gorin set in Jan and some Kino releases.) and this is actually on my list (along with finally going back and upgrading some of my dvds, like Solaris).

I have already placed an pre-order for Fassbinder's Despair that comes out Tuesday, now just need to get something from this B&N sale.

Thanks again for your feedback!

I stopped at one of my nearby B&Ns today after work and saw they have added a lot of new Eclipse sets, including some that had not previously been in stock. One of these was Silent Ozu. I had it in my hands but put it back down, thinking about the future BFI verisions. I went for Postwar Kurosawa instead.

So what made you get the Silent Ozu set? Did you decide it was not worth waiting for the BFI blu-ray releases? If you nudge me enough, I may go back and get it tomoorrow.

I've now watched three out of the four and so far I've really liked them.
Superficially, they're social melodramas, with often a whimsical tone.
However, there's also a strong social comment, made more clear after you read the short essays provided on the inside of the DVD covers. I think CriterionCast have also covered some of these films.
Because they're short and don't have earth-shaking surround-sound mixes, I often save them for late-night viewing after Mrs DrBikeShorts goes to bed.
If you like early Japanese cinema, then this set is definitely recommended.
Thanks for posting this, doc, and to rkish for beating me to the question about the Shimizu set. I am viewing these now on hulu plus. Whimsical is a good word to describe the tone of them, but as you say it is a method for delivering deeper social commentary. Knowing the aggressive militancy dominating Japanese society and politics at this time, and seeing a pre-war Japan, makes these really interesting to me.

I am thinking about getting the Shimizu set also, but I have now exceeded my planned budget for Eclipse series for this sale. I have loaded up on the Japanese sets after the recommendation here and screening them on hulu plus. I may have to make a decision between this one and Basil Dearden's London Underground.

Then again, it is a long time to the next B&N Criterion sale, and the price of these is really attractive right now. I can eat in more often and splurge less on other stuff for awhile if I need to.

Edit: Actually, these Shimizu films are not pre-war, as Japan was already ravaging China. These are pre-Pearl Harbor films, before Japan expanded her war across most of Asia and the Pacific.

Someone needs to answer for this. I am not surprised the review didn't notice it because I am currently on prednisone and have superpowers at the moment that standard humans don't posses.
Looks like I have to cancel Carlos after all, maybe get the UK release. Thanks for the warning.

Apparently their DVD suffers from the same thing so probably some kind of mastering error on Criterion's part (I've had it confirmed that the source mix isn't supposed to sound like that.) Did you hear back from them yet?

Have you got a source for that information?
