In the future I may get the other one but for the moment I will buy one of them to try Fuller's filmmaking.
I would go the opposite direction and recommend The Naked Kiss. It is far more elegant and, in my opinion, better constructed film.

Also, you should consider picking up this 7DVD set while it is still available as I do not foresee Sony porting all films to Blu-ray any times soon:

i picked up the Hiroshi Shimizu set a month or so ago from a nearby Borders that was closing, but hadn't yet been able to watch any. After seeing quite a few of you asking about it, i finally got started on it and watched Japanese Girls at the Harbor. It is quite engaging and, as i think someone else pointed out, it's remarkable to see Japan in that era. The newly created score was rather effective as well, although at times seemed a little overbearing. For those of us that are fans of Japanese Cinema, as well as the silents, this seems like a must have.

i also found this guy's silent film blog and his recap of the entire Shimizu set. It's a pretty good write-up and i imagine will be quite helpful for those on the fence: http://silentfilmchronicle.blogspot....h-hiroshi.html

Since we are also mentioning DVDs, I'll add that The Criterion DVD of Fuller's 'Pickup on South Street' is an excellent addition to the collection.

I'd go with Pickup on South Street, or even The Big red One, but neither are on blu. Although Pickup IS Criterion, in addition to White Dog and the Eclipse set with Steel Helmet.

It looks like either Warner or Criterion will be releasing Malick's Badlands soon:

http://www.terrencemalick.org/2011/1...is-coming.html

Hat tip to CriterionCorner on Twitter for the link.

Not that comments are true, but the comments on the link sure seem to think it will be Criterion. My guess is that if it is a Criterion release it will be announced on Tuesday.

Thanks Matt! I'll read that review when I get a chance, but I think you guys have put me at ease. I'll hopefully be picking this up sometime next week.

Thanks to all for your feedback!

Since people are prepared to take my advice* on Japanese cinema, I'm going to repeat what I've written here a couple of times: Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara is a fantastic DVD box-set
Each film is really good and the extras are plentiful.

* I love Japanese films, but I don't really know anything about Japanese cinema

Thanks for the recommendation, drbikeshorts. I viewed these on hulu plus and agree with you. I think they are fantastic and would gladly add them. The musical scores are also memorable.

However, and this is my personal choice which others may not agree, I am reluctant to add more DVDs to my collection as long as there is a reasonable chance of their being upgraded to blu-ray in the future. That includes Criterions, as wonderful as their DVDs are. Since these are mainline Criterions, they may get upgraded, unlike the Eclipse sets. Given my budget for this sale, I am focused on the Eclipse sets, which are all new to me and highly unlikely for most to see blu-ray anytime soon, if ever.

That is not to say I won't change my mind in the future about the Teshigahara DVD set if it lingers endlessly in DVD-land. But for now I will stream them and wait and see if they are upgraded. For other folks who do not share my reluctance to continue to add more DVDs to their collection, I say go for it. The doc is right, these are real gems.

Quoted for truth. I'd only read seen Woman in The Dunes before buying the set and I liked all the movies. Face of Another on film was for me better than the somewhat dull and meandering book by Kobo Abe. Great extras too.

Watched the Criterion Collection released film Walker, about the life of William Walker on Netflix today. Turned out to be really good. The fire scene near the end of the film was downright amazing IMO, a real work of art.

Yes, this is another 'which one movie would you get from this list' post.

I can add one more movie the order I am making, and I can't decide among these.

Which one would you pick and why?

Videodrome
Kuroneko
Harakiri
The Wages Of Fear
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Hunger
Army of Shadows
Diabolique

I agree with Pro-B. From your list, Diaboliaue, followed by Wages of Fear.

Sweet! Criterion is releasing Badlands!

I can say this with certainty, because if it really is between either WHV or Criterion, WHV would never spend money to create extras for a catalog title they haven't already given a special edition on DVD.

Let's hope. The line "If it was Criterion, I feel they would have had {Billy Weber] contribute for this one" worries me, though. Plus the fact that Warner licenses out its catalog.
