How about another English-language film, Carlos? (for the new guy)

Haven't watched Carlos yet, but I am sure it is a good 'un.

Some of my favorite English language films in the collection that are also good at keeping your attention (yeah, that is subjective, I know):

Ride With the Devil
Mystery Train
Paths of Glory

For All Mankind - a documentary, but never has the Apollo program been shown with more character, heart, and sheer poetic majesty.
Charade
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - mostly in English, has some subtitles for the Japanese
Repulsion
Sweet Smell of Success
Stagecoach
The Killing
Kiss Me Deadly
The Darjeeling Limited
Bottle Rocket
Something Wild
Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Videodrome

The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven - with the caveat that there are some long meditative passages and voiceovers that may not appeal to everyone.

These are the ones I have seen and can remember off the top of my head - I am sure I have forgotten a few. I have not yet watched 3 Women or Naked, and I know some members recommend these highly.

EDIT: Ha, I just re-read my last sentence. If there was a Criterion called 3 Women Naked, I definitely would have already watched it.

I watched my first one tonight.

The Killing. I actually liked Killer's Kiss better though. I know most people didn't care too much for that (including those involved in making it), but I really enjoyed it.

I might need to pick up another Criterion!

Oh and the other one if you could give me your opinion on. I picked up Carlos was intially very interested then i read it was in french which was a bit of a turn off. However i was told for a what 6hr movie it actually flows pretty quickly
I wasn't ridiculing you in any way; I was, more or less, commenting on everyone else jumping down your throat. But the Colts do suck big time.

Anyway, I have not seen Carlos yet. However, I have heard many good things. It is in a few different languages, but like you said, it's probably entertaining enough to not "feel" like a 5+ hour film.

One of my favorite English CC films: Charade. And also the soon to be released The Lady Vanishes.

I have been busy this sale the only ones I do not have are Merry Chistmas, TRL(UK version is the same that i own) 3 women, for all mankind, kes, if, fish tank, topsy, black moon, and howards end. I think i am missing one or two. I may pick up TRL as i owned Dazed and Fear and Loath. already but bought the criterion. In bold are the ones I have watched already. I enjoyed most of them but as i watched them late at night i think they are in for another screening at a reasonable hour. With the killing I did enjoy how Kubric shows how it all came to be and what each of the different guys were doing which led to that particular point of the movie. Sorry if that is a bit vague I just don't wanna spoil anything for anyone.

djgeneral...You should pick up some more titles some are quite interesting and at very least a bit of film history. This last week was also my first experience with any criterion titles.

Yeah, I forgot to list Dazed and Confused, one of my favorites.

High School in Texas in the late 1970s. It nailed the "dopers" pretty well, but not enough "ropers" in the film. You may have to be a Texan to understand.

Great choice! I remember watching that in school as a kid. and for some reason that movie has just stuck with me. I know this may angre ppl but i also like the remake it had quite a cast. If they release both on bluray i would be a happy camper. Who know maybe we will get a twofer with this release aswell. I boy can only dream. You do know about the sale?

Someone replied:
I contacted Jon Mulvaney using the e-mail below regarding a replacement Slip Cover due to B&N's atrocious packaging used in this sale.

Jon responded immediately, asked where I bought it, UPC Number, and when I gave the pertinent information a new Slip is on its way.

A very large Kudo's to Jon and Criterion for this.

Sometimes it takes a while. They're probably pretty busy because of the Barnes and Noble sale. Probably a lot of broken cases and what not. If he doesn't get back to you just send another one. He's usually pretty quick about responding.

I would just tell them where you bought them and what's wrong with them and see what they say. I've had them replace broken cases and torn artwork for free before. I know otherwise they sell booklets and artwork for $5 including shipping. Probably the same for a box or digipack.

I sent an email about my broken case/artwork from my latest order, last night. I really hope I get a reply. My previous effort at emailing never received a reply...

Mulvaney always ends up replying, just be patient. He has to answer a LOT of emails.

I wouldn't wait around for that. No telling if and/or how many Criterion titles they might even discount.

I officially declare my self done with this sale. My 1 blu-ray turned into:

Salo
The Phantom Carriage
Island of Lost Souls
Cul-de-Sac
Night of the Hunter
Bigger Than Life
Kagemusha.

At least this year my criterions went from 0 to 15
I know the feeling. I ended up with 9 this sale. I had 11 last 50% off sale. I went from 8 Criterions (7 BDs, 1 DVD) in 2010, to 57 (62 if you count the bonus films included on a couple BD releases, and counting my pre-order of 12 Angry Men/Army of Shadows).

I already have one on pre-order for 2012.

FYI, TCM is doing a Criterion double bill next Monday, the 21st:

1:00 PM - Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
Detective Mike Hammer fights to solve the murder of a beautiful hitchhiker with a mysterious connection to the Mob.
Dir: Robert Aldrich Cast: Ralph Meeker , Albert Dekker , Paul Stewart .
BW-106 mins, TV-PG, CC, Letterbox Format

3:00 PM - Paths Of Glory (1957)
A military lawyer comes to question the status quo when he defends three men accused of cowardice.
Dir: Stanley Kubrick Cast: Fred Bell , John Stein , Harold Benedict .
BW-88 mins, TV-PG, CC

Both the Canadian and US channels will be showing these titles. Times are in EST. Unfortunately, my order of KMD won't be in by then, and I have to work.

I think I willgo and order Fanny & Alexandre before the end of the sale. The review as convince me to get it. Not a favorite per say but I will be seeing often enough to make it worth the purchase overall.

Only thing scaring me is all these posts saying that it's out of stock?
