I think we should have these categories:

-Quote of the year
-Most quoted member (based on perception, I suppose).

But mostly these:

-upgrade of the year
-new spine of the year
-best box set
-best cover art
-worst cover art
-worst new spine
-worst upgrade

This thread is pretty active, and isn't full of nasty people, contrary to what non-Criterion fans think.* Half the people in the B&N sale thread called Criterion fans "snobby know-it-alls," until they got their hands on a coupon.
I agree on both points. That thread has gotten out of hand, with some people thinking that the value of each disc is so high we should all be more than willing to spend retail price on them, and disapproving of us looking for the best deal...

And you're also right that some people have come out and talked bad about Criterion...then have went right around and rounded up coupons to buy 20 of them..

I think we should have most popular member instead of most quoted. Some names get tossed around without any quotes.

Most people seem to think I'm in the former camp, but I'm not. I have no issues with using that damn coupon, but for god's sakes, there's a thing called being discreet. Buying 5-10 CCs at a time, and running each one in on its own separate transaction to get them all at 10 bucks is not being discreet, it's called being greedy and selfish, as there could be others who want those titles too. Not all stores get their stock regularly either. Same with some of the people who ended up with 5 or 6 of the 25% off coupon, while others got none. The attitude was first come, first serve. It's nice that they're buying CCs, but they're not the only ones who want Criterions.

As far as the stupid 8/40 coupon goes, use it on one or two titles, and go back a week later if you're going to use what's supposed to be a one time use coupon multiple times. B&N kinda screwed themselves by not monitoring that coupon uniformly. People were able to work it to their advantage, but there's such a thing as taking too much advantage of it. B&N are now making coupons difficult to use. Some people are still able to use the coupon, but it's really a YMMV situation. The fact that B&N is now enforcing a tighter control over the coupons shouldn't upset or surprise anyone, but it does, and a lot of people believe they didn't do anything wrong. I know a lot of people didn't abuse the coupon, but the few who did make everyone look bad. Also, we're very lucky B&N didn't decide to shitcan the sale altogether because of the coupon abuse. That's what I was concerned about.

Therefore, a handful of people, who may or may not post on this forum, have ruined coupon usage at B&N for everyone in future sales. There's a fine line between good deal, and ripping off the store. But because I think that, I'm somehow a coupon Nazi that hates all coupons.

What ever happened to buying movies because you enjoy them? I can't wait for my films to show up, although that won't be for at least another week or so for my first two orders. I'm thankful for the sale, as I was able to get some titles for 20 bucks, when prices are usually double or more in Canada.

At least I have 40 some films on the PVR set up. God Bless TCM.

Simple fix for one-time use coupons. The store I went to kept the coupon after scanning it.

Groovy! I need to watch it before I even think about buying it. B&N shipped Stagecoach and Kiss Me Deadly yesterday for me, even though they said it wouldn't ship until tomorrow.

Honestly, I'm already spending far too much money in movies to pass around some savings somewhere just for the sake of it.

In fact, I've never paid the full price for any of my Criterion, except recently, since I've ordered Fanny & Alexander, the 3 colors trilogy and 12 Angry Men from Planet Axel, cause, well, I already received everything.

However, it's clear that people taking advantage of the system will probably prevent honest people to take advantage of a fair saving, but this is an other issue, I believe.

But in some way, B&N also let it happened, so...

That thread seriously needs to be locked down, as it's all negative, and it;s more about how cheap we can get the films by scamming B&N with the coupons (not everyone, but a few are like that, ironically, the most defensive ones), and how much we can insult each other, rather than how awesome Criterions are. It's diasppointing.

Agreed. All signs have pointed to The Gold Rush for a while now.

As for me, living in Germany I really am glad this biannual sale exists. If it weren't for this opportunity I probably couldn't afford buying CC titles in the long run. I'm perfectly fine with that $20 price mark. Here's hoping B&N won't discontinue the use of coupons during the sale as the 10% off is always good for compensating for the shipping costs.
True, true, I didn't think about that.

I'm a Canadian, so I know all about price marks. I'm just worried that B&N will stop the sales altogether. I have and will buy Criterions for more than 20 bucks, but it is nice to get them on sale.

I'm still counting on Anatomy of A Murder being announced tomorrow, I'm going to pre-order the crap out of it if it is.

Email Jon Mulvaney. He responded to an email about the encoding error in The Thin Red Line rather quickly on Friday. Still hasn't followed up to my reply though.

Yeah, I e-mailed him last week. No response.
I don't thing it's their fault, it's probably in the mix itself. It's possible after 5hrs the sound designer got lazy...

Oh, I agree. The talk their has nothing to do with the movies themselves rather how cheap you can get them. As someone has already stated I suspect the majority of people taking advantage of the coupons are just re-sellers.

For the Criterion experts, where is the cheapest place to get Rushmore on release day?

Thanks in advance!
