After 4 straight B&N sales I've participated in, just today was the first time I used a coupon and bought ANY item in-store....

Got Three Colors and Rules of the game, gave them a single $8/$40 coupon (my printer was out of ink, and you could only see the barcode, and practically nothing else.... I just told her what the coupon was for, and even when it expired!) and she said "Oh... o.k." and my total out the door was $49.50


NOW.... can we PLEASE stay on topic

OK, I knew about World on a Wire (finally Fassbinder), but how do you know the Downey Eclipse is being announced? Don't get my hopes up on 2 great Eclipse sets back-to-back months.

Speaking of Eclipse sets, are there many people on here who collect these in addition to Criterion's blu-ray releases? If so, any favorites or specific recommendations?

I'm intrigued by many of them and after reading several reviews, decided to order 18 sets to take advantage of the B&N sale.

Obviously, the Eclipse sets are DVD only, but since (as I understand it) the titles in this series are unlikely to be upgraded to blu-ray, I thought they might be fair game for discussion on this forum.

If you haven't seen it, the BFI blu-ray of The Innocents looks pretty darn good. I'm quite happy with that release.

Oh I know, I was quite impressed by it, and to be honest, I'm surprised TCM has shown it about 3-4 times in the past 2 months. It could be because I'm watching the Canadian channel, which does a lot of "subbing" of various films.

Do you have it in HD where you are? In Montreal it's not in HD which is a bit sad.

Well, I wouldn't say that I "collect" them but I do buy them to watch the films. For the value, though (especially during these B&N sales), there's no reason that people shouldn't be looking into picking up a few of the Eclipse sets.

Since the current sale, there has been quite a bit of discussion over the Eclipse sets in this forum. These films don't get any kind of restoration from Criterion like their main line releases... it's just not profitable for Criterion to release these films any other way, I suppose. So, if any of the films ever do see a blu-ray release I highly doubt it will be from Criterion since they'd have to go back and do some restoration work on each film to get it up to blu-ray standards.

It's okay... you're Canadian. You're forgiven.

It's a region B title, anyway, so that might stop you from looking into it.

BFI has released a lot of other great films on blu-ray that are region-free, though, if you haven't already looked into them.

It's an extra 13.50 a month if I want it, and the other HD channels in Halifax through Bell aliant, and unfortunately, I can't justify paying extra for HD channels. I'd rather put that money towards things such as car parts, rent, food, and the odd BD. My parents have it in HD at their place, via Bell satelite. Bell only added it to their line-up, along with AMC, in 2009. Before, only Starchoice/Shaw satelite and Rogers cable had it. My parents had Starchoice, but when they bought their HDTV in 2008, they switched to Bell, and I was deeply disappointed. I did have Rogers when I was in London, and would often pull all-nighters with TCM on in the background. Before we had Starchoice, I was fortunate enough to have a Dish Network dish, so I got to see TCM unedited by Canadian broadcasters, and AMC before they showed commercials every 5 minutes.

The HD channel is nice, but it's also prone to "blackouts." The film will show up on the SD channel, but on the HD channel, it's a black screen saying that there are no rights to show it. I've also been noticing that the Canadian channel is losing more and more rights to films they used to be able to show. For example, in 2008 I was able to watch a whole whack of Peter Sellers films, back in January, half of those films were "subbed" out, including Dr. Strangelove, which had been shown on TCM the month before.

Thanks. I only had it for a month a little while back and when it went off I did not think of asking to have it back. From what you are telling me I suppose I won't bother and just continue renting my Criterion instead.
