If you haven't seen Vampire's Kiss, you should. Nic Cage walking around thinking he is a vampire by being bit by a woman. He even uses cheap, fake vampire teeth. Awesome.

I live near DC, The Bad Lieutenant is playing two theaters here, its an excellent film. Nicolas Cage & Werner Herzog make a great team!

I haven't seen Vampire's Kiss but I definitely will. The trailer is pretty cool, I love it when he goes over the top.

Herzog and Cage does sound like the perfect match.

You won't be let down by Vampire's Kiss for sure. I seen it on MGMHD, I am hoping for a blu-ray since they have a HD transfer already.

Does anyone know if Criterion still offering the Blu-ray case replacement? I have some digipacks that need a new case.

This is something I've asked around elsewhere without a response. Hopefully folks here are a bit more educated…

I was looking at the Monterey Pop Festival packaging and saw that the first disc has a date of 1967 on it and the Jimi & Otis disc states a date of 1986
Was this an error on Criterion's part, or were the Jimi & Otis films not released until '86?
When were they actually filmed?

Thank you for any information around this topic.

If it's true I'm sure it will be great . Big fan of his work. Even though some movies needed multiple viewings, I think all of them are amazing. Can't wait for Punch-Drunk Love and Magnolia on Blu-ray too.

This is a bit offtopic, but Estonian parliament decided to lower the VAT-free limit for imports outside EU to 20EUR. This means that I probably have to pay 20% VAT for Criterions, and this means less Criterions for me. Luckily our local government doesn't have power to lower the EU customs fee free limit, which remains 150EUR.

And while I'm already posting, I'd like to promote new Estonian film called "The Temptation of St. Tony" which was selected for Sundance 2010 international competition list. You can find the trailer here and IMDb information here. End credits give special thanks to Louis Buñuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini but it is kind of a homage to many other great auteurs also.

Actually I just e-mailed them yesterday and got a response. They apparently have all the replacement cases in-stock now... except for Bottle Rocket. The representative told me I can make my payment for that now as well and they would ship out all the cases when Bottle Rocket goes in stock.
Also, there is a discount on the cases now: $5 for the first two, and $2.50 for any additional cases (previously it was $5 for per case no matter what).

Good news, indeed! Thanks for the info, Leshita! I'll have to spread the joyous news around.

I'm in the same boat, except that ~20EUR has been the limit for ages here.

It's a bit annoying, but fortunately $19.99 + shipping is under the limit, and most Criterions seem to have dropped to that point at one time or another, so I just have to be patient.

Good choices! Glad to see you're taking the leap. Seriously, though, if you enjoy well-made movies, then the leap is by no means a big stretch. That's not to see you'll enjoy everything that Criterion's chosen to release over the years, but you're bound to find many hidden jewels that you may have never experienced if it weren't for Criterion.

Monterey Pop was released theatrically in 1967 (not 1978) and it says 1967 on the cover.

Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey were released in 1986 (not 1987) and it says 1986 on the packaging.

Recent Q&A on Criterion's Facebook page:

"Q: Can we expect blu-ray releases of Seven Samurai or High and Low in 2010?

A: 2010 is AK's centennial, so one imagines there will probably be some Kurosawa Blu-rays"

----

My guess? Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro. Personally, I'd love to get any, but would be pleasantly surprised if they do Red Beard on BD.

If I order any of the Criterions earlier Blu-Ray releases from amazon.com, will they come in the new 14mm clear case or digibook case?

I purchased The Third Man from Bestbuy.com, it came in the new 14mm clear case. I also ordered The Seventh Seal from amazon.com still waiting for delivery, should expect a digibook or 14mm clear case?

I am planning on ordering a few more of the earlier releases but if they still ship the older packaging I can wait.

Expect a 14mm clear case for Seventh Seal.

And enjoy the film
