That has to be a mistake..Amazon reckons the SRP is $23.97, and the Criterion site says $39.95. Also the DVD is more expensive on Amazon.

Didn't stop me pre-ordering it though

Edit: Oh, and World on a Wire is $16.99 also??? Ka-ching! Sold!

That was fast, normally it takes a few days for them to put up the titles. World on a Wire's also 16.99, and they are coming from Amazon themselves.

La Jetee / Sans Soleil isn't available yet though.

Edit: La Jetee is really the only one not available on BD from Amazon yet. I've been adding the ASIN numbers in.

I preordered both. Doubtful if it will be honored but can't hurt to try.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the graph is reasonably close to the film output for each country as well

CG - Clearly I was wrong about the Robert Downey Eclipse set.

Not having seen Tiny Furniture, so I can't comment on the film. The cover is one of the worst I've ever seen. Who looks at that and says "this looks like a must see! Some fat girls fat face!" Ugh.

What? I have no interest in seeing the film, but the girl's not fat:

The cover is very appropriate, from what I can see of the basic plot of the film.

I think Pro-B is right. I adore Kurosawa but he is "the introduction" to Japanese cinema for most people but most people get stuck on him and fail to see there is more to Japan then him. It's like those who only watch kung fu movies and think that's all there is in Chinese cinema. I don't think there is a conceit as you say, just that someone like to point out there is other things to watch and they would like to have it made available. There is nothing wrong with that.

If anyone wanted to pre-order La Jetee / Sans Soleil here's a tip from the thread in the hot deals section:

The accent grave (P@t, correct me if I'm wrong) has made the spelling of La Jetee show up as La Jetée.

For the record, I like that Criterion's taking a break from Kurosawa with the other Japanese titles. I like Kurosawa, but The other Japanese titles coming out lately have been really interesting to watch.

Which Amazon are you on? It's still saying 27.99 for the BD for me. I'm not ordering it, because I hit my limit with February purchases.

Gotcha. I was actually asking if I had the correct term for the accent. I get them confused, and honestly haven't taken a French course in about 8 or 9 years.

B&N has them up too? I'm impressed. Only Amazon Canada seems to be missing them.

Yeah just got that dreaded (and inevitable) email myself. The frustrating thing is that the site still says, "ships within 24hrs."

A lot of people are getting delays or cancellations. My friend had his Fanny and Alexander order cancelled, and his copies of Dazed and Confused & The Killing, which he ordered with The Battle of Algiers, have been delayed. Algiers shipped last week.

Poor you. At least you know what not to pre-order for February now. You can get Anatomy of a Murder instead!

The past couple Criterion sales I've looked at picking up Jules et Jim and Shoot the Piano Player on DVD, but I realize those have got to be on their way. Looking forward to The Soft Skin, which just had a new 35mm Janus print, shortly as well. And The Bride Wore Black would be very nice, though isn't that an MGM (distribution...so FOX) title?

I might convince myself to pick up the Doinel set sometime on DVD, as I don't believe those are in a rush to be upgraded. Then again the Fassbinder BRD set apparently is - and right after I picked it up during the last sale! - so those box-sets certainly aren't too exempt from blu upgrades.

And I also jumped on the World on a Wire Amazon pre-order. Though I wasn't too keen on the titles released yesterday, being a Fassbinder and available for $16.99 was too good to pass up.

No way ! Trust me, there are tons of other films at each country. Not all of them are gems, mind you, but it is the same thing with cinema of France, US and Japan. There are many strong film industries way too underrepresented by Criterion. For example, where is the cinema of countries like Iran, Russia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil in the Collection? Their film output is incredibly strong and consistent year by year, it's cinema that deserves to be seen by a wider audience .
