Still kicking myself for missing the good prices on Gojira and Traffic from January (I feel like there was a third film I wanted that month but don't remember what it was).
As a general guideline, when Criterion announces titles you may be interested in (on or around the 15th of each month), keep frequently checking (at least once each day) Amazon or Blu-ray.com's websites and if those titles are available for preorder at the typical price (around $27.99 at Amazon.com), preorder immediately. That way, if the price increases before release date, you will have at least secured the more reasonable price. And if the price goes down, you'll pay the lower price.

Of course, if the price in your order a few days before release date is still higher than you'd like to pay, you can just cancel that item from your order.

That's a worthwhile policy for any film, let alone Criterions. Although it's especially a good way to order Criterions.

I'm still waiting for February's films to be available for pre-order on .ca.

Since they didn't change their unique inventory number, and tell people that the item is canceled (and then re-input it) I'd say it looks good for them honoring it.

With that said:

Just got done watching Fat Girl. Let's just say that movie surprised me quite a bit. Not quite sure how I feel about it. Going to listen to the director interview shortly. Anyone else see this one? What did you think?

I think I might be in the minority, but it is one of my favorite Criterion blu ray releases, and one that I have watched a lot.

You aren't alone. It is one of my favorite films ever. Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite Criterion blu. I personally find it fascinating. And you're right, melo4mvp, it is a film that really needs 'digesting'. It's a lot to take in, and there's definitely a lot to think/talk about when it comes to the film.

I think I liked it as well.
[Show spoiler]I guess the last scene just completely caught me off guard. I had an idea something bad was going to happen but that was the last thing I thought. I don't remember watching a movie that did that quite so well

I had the DVD, and was pretty excited when they announced the BD (bought it of course!)

Not sure about one of my favorites, but it's in the top 20% or so.

That's probably why they were so upset. Who wants a quitter reading to their kids?

What kind of message does that send???

It's a pity that parents are so sensitive. What are the kids going to do - find out what porn is and run home and check her out, begin a life of sexual depravity, and wind up lonely and single their entire lives because of their dependency on adult content?

No. I'd be far more worried about the husbands rushing to the school to "pick up the kids" that day than I would be about the kids themselves.

Does anyone know where you could order 400 Blows, and Last Year at Marienbad and be assured of receiving them in the normal (non digipack) plastic case?

Everywhere I go, I keep seeing them in the old style digiback cases (and they usually look pretty beat up). I'm not one that would pay for the replacement case, but I'd certainly like to get them in the more durable hard case if I can - I've actually avoided buying these hoping one of the stores near me would get fresh copies in....

Anyone ordered those at B&N.com lately have any feedback? I assume if I went with criterion.com it would be newer hard cases?

Summer Hours is still one of my favourite, maybe even my favourite, blind-buy Criterions. I've watched it and loved it twice.

It's definitely a great film - not something I'd pull out to entertain my own parents (Pirates of the Caribbean for them) - but definitely immensely enjoyable on its own merits.
